COMMANCHE UP FOR THE CUP

Dive in with COMMANCHE FALLS (Goodwood, 3.40), who has everything in place to run a massive race in the Unibet Stewards’ Cup.

It all has to fall right in these cavalry-charge handicap sprints, including being handed a massive portion of luck in running.

But the chance of the speedster trained by Michael Dods is excellent.

He has proved that he copes well with an undulating track such as Goodwood, having won at Ripon which also has gradients that can throw a runner off its stride.

He carries a 6lb penalty as a result of his win last time out at Hamilton when he beat Music Society and Mr Wagyu, both of whom have since run well to throw a positive light on the form.

Which stall a runner is drawn in is a big focus every year before the Stewards’ Cup but the most important factor is usually being able to race close to rivals who force the pace.

That has happened to Commanche Fall, so jockey Connor Beasley should be able to get a good tow in the race.

James Fanshawe-trained Fresh, who was caught on the line by Rohaan in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, is at the head of the betting, and there has been plenty of market support for William Haggas-trained Hurricane Ivor.

The gelding dead-heated at Sandown two runs ago and definitely did not enjoy the luck of the draw earlier this month when starting away from the main action and beaten a short head by Significantly.

Another for the shortlist is Desert Safari, who was third to Lord Riddiford in a handicap at this meeting earlier in the week.
