Robin Goodfellow’s racing tips: Best bets for Saturday, December 10
The cold snap continues to play havoc with National Hunt racing, but Cheltenham defied the freezing temperatures yesterday and supporters of FRERO BANBOU (Cheltenham, 1.50) will be hoping today’s card survives a morning inspection.
Venetia Williams has struck form in recent weeks and it looks as though an assignment like the AIS December Gold Cup will suit her seven-year-old, especially the step up in trip on decent ground.
The selection caught the eye with a creditable finishing effort in last season’s Grand Annual Chase on atrocious ground, when a last-fence blunder threatened to stop him in his tracks.
Frero Banbou, here racing in 2021, is a horse to watch out for if Cheltenham goes ahead
Given that error, Frero Banbou did extremely well to finish within six lengths of the winner, Global Citizen, and he has run to a solid level in a couple of starts since, including when looking a little short of pace at the minimum trip behind Boothill at Ascot.
An extended two-and-a-half miles may be more his trip and he ought to run well today.
The times suggested the ground was as advertised yesterday, and there is the prospect of it becoming a little quicker, but that should not inconvenience FIRST STREET (Cheltenham, 2.25) in the Unibet International Hurdle.
First Street is also tipped to be streets ahead of rivals in the Unibet International Hurdle at 2.25
Stablemate Epatante is more fancied by the market and it is easy to see why, given she chased home the mighty Constitution Hill at Newcastle in the Fighting Fifth on the same day First Street was beating Grivetana in the Gerry Feilden Hurdle at Newbury.
However, First Street had conceded the well-regarded runner-up 25lb and was lengthening clear at the line, so it might be worth recalling his excellent effort in defeat in the County Hurdle last spring when only State Man proved too strong.
That form has already taken a couple of handsome boosts and the layers look to have underestimated the selection, who probably hasn’t finished improving just yet.
