Raceday focus: Best bets, inside mail for Goulburn, Lismore

Form analyst Matt Jones is confident a three-year-old gelding can end the day at Goulburn on a winning note while a Matthew Dunn-trained gelding is worth plenty of thought at Lismore.

GOULBURN

BEST BET

Race 8, No.7: NOBLE SOLDIER

He didn’t have much go his way first-up at Nowra on a bog track but really did hit the line well after racing wide. He’s got a good second-up record and can win this from the best part of the track.

NEXT BEST

Race 6, No.2: GALACTIC WARRIOR

How good could this horse be? Watch the reply of his debut win. It was unbelievable. He spelled after that and put in a very nice trial ahead of his return on his home track.

QUADDIE

Race 5: 1, 3, 4, 6

Race 6: 1, 2

Race 7: 6, 13, 14

Race 8: 7, 8, 9, 11

JOCKEY TO WATCH

Chad Lever could win back-to-back races in the fifth and sixth events with Deel With Me and Loca. Suprina is also a big watch in the seventh.

LISMORE

BEST BET

Race 3, No.2: DELIBERATION

He’s well placed in a pretty weak race so it’s his to win. He’s got the perfect gate and has a powerful trainer/jockey combination behind him.

TRAINER TO WATCH

Daniel Bowen is always one to watch at Lismore. He can win the first with Exhibitor and Beef Week Princess is a more suitable race in the fifth.

RACE 5

Crazy Train’s form on paper when she races on rain-affected tracks is misleading and she should handle the heavy and race well considering the form she’s been in. Deel With Me had too much to do here last start so forgive he eighth placing now that he’s in an easier race and up a little in trip. He was motoring through line last time too which caught the eye. Linden Tree chased an in-form horse over 1200m here first-up. He’s straight to 1500m now and raced like he would love that second-up. Akatino has been freshened and is suitable placed in this grade.

Bet: Deel With Me to win

RACE 6

Galactic Warrior produced a Chautauqua-like performance on debut when winning after being five lengths off the leaders at the 100m and running near last at the time. He motored home to win. He’s had a 30-week spell and going by his lead up trial, he’s not gone backwards in his break. Loca also returns from a spell after getting to a Canberra Guineas last time in and he’s in a new stable now which is often a positive for a horse. The market says the race is between these two. Ten Bells and Smuggler’s Run look to be the best of the rest.

Bet: Galactic Warrior to win

RACE 7

It’s hard not to be impressed with the way first starter Smarter Than You trialled leading up to her debut and she’s got a good gate and the leading rider on board. Now we get to see what’s really under the bonnet. Suprina has placed five times from 10 runs and is the best performed of those with race experience and can lead from the inside gate. Sureel has had plenty of education ahead of her first run with five trials and two spells in between and the patience may pay off. She looked good in her latest hit out for Bjorn Baker.

Bet: Smarter Than You to win

RACE 8

Nicci’s Song hasn’t been seen publicly since going down as an odds-on favourite at Canberra in April but she did win fresh off no official trial last time in and she handles wet ground. Noble Soldier also races well on wet tracks and does well second-up. He would’ve won first-up if he didn’t have to race so wide. He’s drawn wide which might not be a problem by this time of the day with the cut up track and with luck, he’s tough to hold out. Vee Eight is the one who they’ll have to run down and he’s won three times on heavy ground.

Bet: Noble Soldier to win

THE INSIDE MAIL FOR LISMORE

RACE 5

Beef Week Princess has been busy this time in with three good runs in a short space of time so she’s thriving and she gets out to 1516m now after finding the 1400m too short third-up. She’ll sit off them and try and find cover from the wide draw. Edification just needs to hold his form and he’ll be in the finish off a pretty good run in a $40,000 race at the Grafton carnival. Cefalu hasn’t been winning but his best effort is good enough to beat the majority of these home but can he win? Everything needs to go his way. Italian Princess is the other threat.

Bet: Beef Week Princess to win

RACE 6

Courageous arrives here first-up with an awkward draw to overcome. He does have a good jockey on who knows him and if he jumps well, he might try and cross them and lead. Stablemate Emma Rosa has a much better draw which has to give her a hope third-up. She just needs to relax better in the run and dropping back to 1100m assists that. Taikun Tommy has to be better than he was last start even though it was a win. It came off a very long break and it’s hard to return a winner after more than a year out so look for another nice run. Call Me Maggie will race on the speed and go close.

Bet: Courageous to win

RACE 7

In Fiore doesn’t win out of turn but he’s racing well and will attract support here. He’s knocking on the door and a change of stable might be what he needs to go that extra yard. Sweeping The Board is the best horse in the race and a 4kg claimer gets him in this with a winnable weight but Jasper Franklin has to ride well from barrier 12. Jett Austin can lead this field into the straight and has led all the way to win at this track before.

Bet: Quinella 1, 9

RACE 8

Leica Bita Fun only had to beat four home first-up but he still did it by a length and while there’s more rivals to beat this time, it’s not an overly strong race. Pieropan has a had a trial since having a six-week freshen up after being a beaten favourite at Murwillumbah. Two runs back at Coffs Harbour he won in impressive fashion so a return to that form makes him a player here. Sawtell and Storm Attack don’t win often but have it in them to go close here.

Bet: Pieropan to win
