Raceday focus: Best bets, analysis, latest odds for Caulfield

TAB tipping expert Nick Quinn gives his suggested bets for the feature races at Caulfield and Randwick this Saturday.

BEST BET: Lions Roar (Randwick, R3 No.1)

VALUE BET: I Am Superman (Randwick, R7 No.9)

LAY OF THE WEEK: Killourney (Caulfield, R7 No.12)

HANDICAP (2000M)

Caulfield, R7, 3.55pm

The Nick Ryan-trained Mahamedeis is on the quick back-up after claiming the VOBIS Gold Heath over 2000m as a heavily backed favourite last Saturday.

He does his best racing at Caulfield with five of his 11 career victories at the track and he has won five of his 14 starts over 2000m.

He looks well placed to win again and has firmed from $3 into $2.90.

Bold frontrunner Inverloch has been a quaddie killer, including last start when saluting at $26.

He should be suited stepping back up in trip to 2000m after winning over the mile last start and must be included in multiples.

Former import Killourney is on the second line of betting but for mine looks way under the odds at $3.30. I anticipate he will start around $5.

He has caught the eye in two Australian runs and now steps up to a more suitable trip.

The Chris Waller stable must always be respected in staying races and they saddle up three runners – Brimham Rocks ($8.50), Yonkers ($8.50) and The Lord Mayor ($21)

THE TIP: MAHAMEDEIS win

FRANK PACKER PLATE (2000M)

Randwick, R3, 1.10pm

An incredible betting market in the Frank Packer Plate with Lion’s Roar a $2 favourite ahead of Khoekhoe $3.20 and High Supremacy $3.40 (in from $3.60), with Achiever on the fourth line at $31.

Lion’s Roar caused an upset when he won the Group 1 Randwick Guineas before running fourth in the Rosehill Guineas and third in the ATC Derby.

Provided he has enough petrol in the tank after a busy campaign, he again shapes as the one to beat.

Khoekhoe looked to be travelling like the winner in the Derby and drops back in trip. He has the ability to be in the finish should be get an economical run-in transit.

High Supremacy was an eye-catcher last start after being slowly away and cramped for room up the straight before working home well into fifth and looks a leading challenger to Lion’s Roar.

It would be stating the obvious to say it would be a monumental upset if the winner came from outside those three.

THE TIP: LION’S ROAR win

ALL AGED STAKES (1400M)

Randwick, R7, 3.55pm

Masked Crusader has been well backed to win Saturday’s Group 1 All Aged Stakes.

The team Hawkes-trained galloper was backed from $3.50 into $3 throughout the early part of the week in pre-post betting and reopened $3 after drawing poorly in gate 12.

Punters have not been put off by the draw and he has firmed into $2.80

Two starts ago Masked Crusader won the Group 1 William Reid at The Valley before catching the eye with a fast-finishing second to Nature Strip in the TJ Smith Stakes.

James Cummings has a strong hand in the race with the $7 second elect Savatiano, who has won her past three starts including the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes in March (beating Masked Crusader) and Doncaster winner Cascadian, who will again be partnered by Jamie Kah.

Newmarket Handicap winner Zoutori also comes through the TJ having finished fourth and is out to $15.

He has won at 1400m and is worth including in the multiples.

Another roughie who will run well is the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained I Am Superman.

The five-year-old comes into this race after winning the Group 2 Ajax Stakes over 1500m and has won three times over 1400m.

THE TIP: I AM SUPERMAN each-way, MASKED CRUSADER win
