Raceday focus: Best bets, analysis, latest odds for Bendigo, plus Nick Quinn’s Golden Slipper Day tips

Herald Sun form analyst Brad Waters runs the rule over Saturday’s Golden Mile meeting at Bendigo.

BEST BET

CHANTREA (Race 5, No. 1)

Talented Perth mare making her local debut for trainer Lindsey Smith. Her first-up record is excellent and she races well at the 1400m. She’s well in at the weights and should be hard to beat.

VALUE BET

SKYWARD (Race 8, No. 3)

Talented import that has been gelded since his first two runs in Australia. Showed he has come back well in his jumpouts this time in and could provide a blowout in the Golden Mile.

RACE 1 (12:25PM): BM90 HANDICAP (1400m)

Interesting start to a tough meeting for punters at Bendigo but getting off to a flyer is possible if BIOMETRIC (6) can produce his best form in the opening race. He gave too much start at Sandown last time but was excellent in Group 3 company two runs back. MAN FROM UNCLE (7) was excellent in the Wangoom Handicap first-up last time in and has jumped out well. SECOND SLIP (8) is racing well in Adelaide and looks ready for another crack at 1400m. FOX HALL (5) wasn’t far away in the Echuca Cup and should go well over his favourite trip.

SUGGESTED BET: Biometric each-way.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Tavidance $4.40 – $3.50

RACE 2 (12:50PM) BM84 HANDICAP (1100m)

A field of 10 has accepted for this BM84 contest in which YULONG STORM (6) is worth a small each-way play after a steady first-up effort at Echuca. He’s a second-up winner and has gone well at both runs on this course. SIMPLY OPTIMISTIC (2) was competitive in all runs this time in and should be running on well at the end of this. STREET ICON (5) wasn’t disgraced behind the impressive Ancestry at The Valley last time out and drops in class for this. Local mare VUNGERS (3) is yet to win first-up but will be charging home on her home track fresh.

SUGGESTED BET: Yulong Storm to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Simply Optimistic $3.80 – $3.40

RACE 3 (1:30PM): VOBIS GOLD RUSH (1000m)

The VOBIS Gold Rush is the richest race of the Bendigo program and one that is a winnable assignment for the John Sadler-trained STARRY LEGEND (3). Hopefully, he eases in betting but the youngster was most impressive on debut at Sandown. FROSTIN’ (2) has drawn wide but was a strong winner at Bendigo last time out. RUSHEEN (4) was a game on-pace winner at Bendigo on debut last December and could show up again here. IRISH MINT (11) was too fast for her rivals on debut at Bendigo and will again be in this for a long way.

SUGGESTED BET: Starry Legend to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Matao Ma $9.50 – $6.50

RACE 4 (2:10PM): BM84 HANDICAP (2400m)

The 2400m race looks set to be a battle of tactics, which could suit the Peter Moody-trained SHEPARD (8) who will race on the speed and enjoys the 2400m trip. FANCIFUL TOFF (4) was narrowly beaten at The Valley last time out and should be thereabouts again. HARIPOUR (2) is looking for this trip after a couple of steady efforts in country cups at his last two runs. THE STATESMAN (8) gets up in trip after two sound runs this time in and could bob up at odds.

SUGGESTED BET: Shepard to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Fanciful Toff $2.60 – $2.50

RACE 5 (2:50PM): BENDIGO GOLD BRACELET (1400m)

WA mare CHANTREA (1) makes her Victorian debut in the Gold Bracelet and she’ll certainly make her presence felt first-up. She won her first six races, including two at 1400m, and went well in three stakes races in Perth. She’s jumped out well and blinkers go on. JUST STELLAR (2) is up in class but worth considering here while RUBY SKYE (4) is capable of showing up fresh. ZAYYDANI (11) is a talented mare that has had her share of issues but her ability is undoubted.

SUGGESTED BET: Chantrea to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Need New Friends $2.90 – $2.50

RACE 6 (3:30PM): ST LEGER TRIAL (2200m)

The three-year-old staying contest has attracted a full and open field of promising types, which could produce an upset in the form of YULONG STATUS (16), who ran honestly against older horses last time and that form stood up at Sandown on Wednesday. PRINCESS RHAENYS (12) was most impressive breaking her maiden on debut and could measure up. EXPLOSIVE JACK (1) is racing well and must be respected while BELTORO (3) is another racing honestly that should be around the mark.

SUGGESTED BET: Yulong Status each-way.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Explosive Jack $11 – $8

Annavisto was unlucky at Flemington. Picture: Racing Photos via Getty ImagesSource:Getty Images

RACE 7 (4:10PM): BENDIGO GUINEAS (1400M)

The Listed Bendigo Guineas is more or less a Benchmark 72 race worth $150,000 but isn’t the easiest race for punters to assess. ANNAVISTO (8) was a touch unlucky at Flemington last time out but should be competitive again. ORNAMENTAL LADY (12) hit the line well at Sandown last time out and should enjoy the big track at Bendigo. MILITARY PARADE (6) heads to Bendigo with a strong Sydney win under his belt and could continue to improve.

SUGGESTED BET: Annavisto win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Redeel $11 – $8.50

RACE 8 (4:50PM): GOLDEN MILE (1600m)

The Golden Mile is easily the toughest race on the card with so many unknowns in the race. I’ve liked what I’ve seen from SKYWARD (3) in his two jumpouts at Cranbourne this time in. His best form is over further but the big field in the Golden Mile could produce the pace he’ll need to fire. KENYA (12) scored first-up at Mornington last time in and Bendigo will suit him. PLATOON (6) ran well in the Group 1 Australian Cup last start and should enjoy the drop in class. IRONCLAD (14) is flying in Adelaide and should run well again.

SUGGESTED BET: Skyward each-way

TAB MARKET MOVER: Kenya $7 – $5.

RACE 9 (5:25PM): CLASS 6 HANDICAP (1300m)

Another tough race to finish the Bendigo meeting with nearly all runners rated between 70 and 77, which makes luck in running most important. COPPER FOX (15) charged home but was narrowly beaten first-up at Wangaratta but he has won two from three second-up and is worth a few bucks each-way. DON’T DOUBT DORY (1) is unbeaten first-up and should run well again while FIGHTING HARADA (5) is a chance to complete a hat trick of wins off a long break. FARETTI (11) has won his last couple and can again give them something to chase.

SUGGESTED BET: Copper Fox each-way

TAB MARKET MOVER: Fighting Harada $4.80 – $3.80

BENDIGO GUINEAS (LISTED, 1400M)

BENDIGO, R7, 4.10PM

It could be a big day for the Mick Price/Michael Kent Jr stable, who saddle up promising filly Annavisto.

The filly resumed from a spell with a dominant win at Pakenham before having no luck at Flemington last start when just pipped by stablemate Cumberbatch.

There has always been big wraps on Annavisto ever since her debut win at Mornington last August and she will be worth sticking with as she races through the grades.

She opened $2.70 before easing to $3. She is currently $2.90.

The early money has come for the John Sadler-trained Mozzie Monster, who has been $13 into $10 and looks tremendous value.

Mozzie Monster was run off her feet early up the Flemington straight before knuckling down late to finish an eye-catching fifth in her return run.

She steps up to 1400m and will be finishing strongly down the outside.

If you want to spend $10 on this race, I would suggest $7.50 on Annavisto and $2.50 on Mozzie Monster.

THE TIP: MOZZIE MONSTER each-way.

ROSEHILL MARKETS: TAB FIXED ODDS

Talented import Addeybb takes out last year’s Ranvet Stakes. Picture: AAPSource:AAP

RANVET STAKES (GROUP 1, 2000M)

ROSEHILL, R4, 2.30PM

When this race was scheduled to be run a week ago it appeared to be a match race between last year’s quinella Addeybb and Verry Elleegant, with Master Of Wine the only runner capable of spoiling the party.

That has now changed significantly with a field of nine set to do battle, including the additions of Colette and Sir Dragonet.

Addeybb and Verry Elleegant had some great stoushes last year during the Sydney carnival in the Ranvet and Queen Elizabeth.

Addeybb prevailed both times and he heads the market at $2.10.

He hasn’t raced since winning the Group 1 Champion Stakes at Ascot in the UK and will again be partnered by crowd favourite Tom Marquand.

Since last year’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Verry Elleegant has not put a foot wrong winning the Winx Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, Caulfield Cup, and last start she dug deep to win the Chipping Norton Stakes.

Verry Elleegant is a $2.80 second elect.

Colette resumed from a spell with a strong win in the Apollo Stakes and is a perfect three from three on heavy ground.

Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet has been extremely poor in both runs this campaign but should be better suited stepping up to 2000m where he has finished outside the top two just once from six attempts.

THE TIP: ADDEYBB-VERRY ELLEEGANT quinella.

ROSEHILL GUINEAS (GROUP 1, 2000M)

ROSEHILL, R5, 3.10PM

The Rosehill Guineas is a competitive race.

Mo’unga should have won the Randwick Guineas when closing late to run second behind Lion’s Roar.

With clear running he looks well placed to hand rising trainer Annabel Neasham her first Group 1 victory.

Mo’unga heads the market at $3 after opening at $3.60.

Montefilia looks set for a big autumn campaign.

She was beaten as an odds-on favourite in the VRC Oaks last spring and will head down an Oaks or Derby path depending on how she performs second-up here.

She has the class to beat the boys and has each-way appeal.

The longshot who I anticipate will run well is the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Explosive Jack at $101.

He won the Tasmanian Derby two starts ago before working home well behind stablemate Grandslam at The Valley last start.

THE TIP: MO’UNGA the win.

Profiteer only needs to repeat Inglis Millennium performance to be right in the mix.Source:Getty Images

GOLDEN SLIPPER (GROUP 1, 1200M)

ROSEHILL, R7, 4.30PM

The money has come (again) for Profiteer, trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr, since the Golden Slipper market was re-posted.

He opened at $4 and has trimmed to $3.70.

Profiteer was defeated for the first time last start when nabbed by Anamoe in the Todman Stakes.

The uncertainty on Saturday is how these juvenile runners will cope with the testing ground, but Profiteer has breeding to suggest he should handle it.

His run was stunning in the Inglis Millennium.

Stay Inside is on the second line of betting at $5. He won his first two starts impressively before running a luckless fourth in the Todman.

He is one runner who should handle a wet track on the back of his four-length victory in the Pierro Plate on a Soft 7.

Artorius is aiming to become the first to complete the Blue Diamond-Golden Slipper double since Sepoy in 2011.

He has eased from $7 out to $10 but with the speed on he can finish over the top of them.

Kalashnikov has turned his form around and the Snowden-trained runner is looking to become the first Black Opal winner to take out the Golden Slipper since Catbird in 1999.

He is $51 and worth including in the multiples, along with Magic Millions winner Shaquero ($26), who is coming off a last-start win in the Pago Pago Stakes.

There has been money for Blue Diamond runner-up Ingratiating ($16 into $14).

THE TIP: PROFITEER win, ARTORIUS each-way.
