Punter wins almost half a MILLION from £17 stake with Minella Indo win
Luck of the Irish! Punter wins almost half a MILLION pounds from £17 Cheltenham Festival bet placed last DECEMBER after trainer Henry de Bromhead made it four wins from four with Minella Indo’s victory in the Gold Cup

One lucky punter from Shannon will be celebrating this evening after winning almost half a million as Henry de Bromhead’s Minella Indo won the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The County Clare native placed the bet back in December, backing Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle at 16/1, Bob Olinger in the Ballymore at 20/1, Put The Kettle On for the Champion Chase at 8/1 before Minella Indo in the Gold Cup, also at 8/1.
His initial €20 (£17) stake came in three months later as de Bromhead’s horse held off stablemate A Plus Tard to return precisely €578,340 (£496,195) on the fourth and final day of the Cheltenham Festival.

Jockey Jack Kennedy rode de Bromhead’s horse home on the Cheltenham Festival’s final day
Rachael Blackmore rode Honeysuckle to victory on Tuesday, with Bob Olinger romping home on Wednesday before favourite Paisley Park lost out to Put The Kettle On the following day, leaving Jack Kennedy to ride Minella Indo to a fine win.
A Paddy Power statement said: ‘After a miserable 2020 I could only think about avoiding Zoom calls and burning banana bread, let alone having the foresight to pull off a life-changing Cheltenham punt.
‘You have to take your hat off. It’s a sublime punt and tops off a great week for Irish punters.’
Fellow punter David Jackson joined him with a six-figure payout, winning an eye-popping ££112,854 after a four-fold accumulator came in.
After the victory, Jackson tweeted: ‘Unbelievable. Thanks very much everyone. I’m in shock. Really appreciate the good wishes. Time for a beer.’
Jackson had placed his bets ante-post – when the odds on his selections were much longer.
Having already backed three winners – with Galvin, Quilixios and Sir Gerhard all coming in, Jack Kennedy’s great late surge brought home the jackpot.
It is the third time this week a winning bet has made the headlines, with Paul Dean cashing out for £250,000 instead of letting his selection run on Thursday.
He was on for £512,000 from a £5 bet placed last June after picking four winners out of five ahead of odds-on favourite Envoi Allen running in the opener on Thursday.
Dean had tweeted details of his bet with Betfair before eventually accepting the partial cash out. He would have scooped £322,000 if Envoi Allen had won but, with jockey Kennedy on board, the favourite fell.
