Newsboy’s best bets and Nap for day five of Royal Ascot 2021

GLEN SHIEL has everything in place to give Hollie Doyle a second career Group 1 in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (4.20) at Royal Ascot this afternoon.

Last summer, Archie Watson’s move to bring the son of Pivotal – formerly smart at a mile – back to six furlongs has paid handsome dividends.

Glen Shiel added to a handicap success at Newcastle in June with a score in a conditions event there at the start of August, lifting a Group 3 at the Curragh a week later.

A step up to the highest level yielded a second to Dream Of Dreams in the Sprint Cup at Haydock in September, but Glen Shiel and Doyle went one better in the British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot the following month, beating Brando by a nose.

My selection returned to the fray in the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh in May, in which he shouldered a Group 1 penalty.

Glen Shiel travelled with purpose before flattening out close home to return fourth behind Gustavus Weston, but is expected to be a different proposition on ground that is tailored to suit.

Biblical rainfall in Royal Berkshire has also turned conditions in favour of WONDERFUL TONIGHT, who gets a confident vote for the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (3.40).

David Menuisier captured the first Group 1 prize of his going-places career when the daughter of Le Havre lifted the Prix de Royallieu at ParisLongchamp in October.

Wonderful Tonight doubled up in the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes on the British Champions Day card, but escapes a penalty for that victory.

Aidan O’Brien has won three of the past five runnings of the Listed Chesham Stakes (2.30), so POINT LONSDALE has to be of interest in the final day’s opening race.

But there is more to the son of Australia’s chance than his trainer’s record in the race.

Point Lonsdale showed abundant promise for the future with a five-and-a-half-length supremacy in a Curragh maiden at the start of the month, and should cope with the step up in class.

O’Brien’s son Joseph has yet to put a Royal Ascot triumph on his burgeoning CV – but that may change with VISUALISATION in the Golden Gates Handicap (5.35).

The son of No Nay Never has to prove his stamina at 10 furlongs but has three firsts and a second to show from his last four outings and is another for whom hock-deep mud will hold no terrors.
