Horse racing is one of the oldest sports in the world due to its basic premise, where one horse simply beats the others over a set course or distance.
Like most modern forms of entertainment, horse racing is incredibly lucrative with another basic premise – to make money, you have to spend money.
The sport is known for hosting some of the most glamorous events, and owners must spend huge amounts of money to run a successful stable and train future winners.
Who are the richest horse racing owners in the world? Saddle up, let’s go on a ride.
Wertheimer brothers – £19bn
Alain and Gerhard Wertheimer own and run famous French fashion label Chanel, allowing them to attain a wealth of £19billion. Their grandfather Pierre Wertheimer founded the company with Gabrielle – otherwise known as Coco – Chanel.
The brothers inherited the company from their father Jacques, as well as a horse racing business. They own La Presle Farm, which is also known as Wertheimer Farm, in the US that is particularly fruitful, with plenty of Conditions race winners coming from that stable.
Their finest find came in the form of Goldikova, who became the only horse to ever win a Breeders’ Cup even three times when she won the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile in three successive years between 2008 and 2010.
They also experienced great success in 1993, when Kotashaan won the Breeders’ Cup Turf and was subsequently named American Horse of the Year.
The Wertheimer brothers are so established that after their horse Solo won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at the QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot in October 2015, they celebrated with The Queen.
Sheikh Mohammed – up to £14bn
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum owns the Godolphin stables in Suffolk, one of the largest thoroughbred horse racing stables and breeding operations in the world.
Sheikh Mohammed has a net worth estimated to be anywhere between £3billion and £14billion, and he has recorded over 5,000 winners worldwide since his stable was founded in 1992.
Despite owning over 1,000 horses around the world, Sheikh Mohammed flexed his financial muscles when he visited Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in Newmarket back in 2019. He purchased the half-brother of Group One winner Barney Roy for over £4million, because why not?
His son Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, affectionately known as Fazza, loves horse racing and regularly posts images of himself with stars like Pinatubo when he isn’t showing off his friendships with Cristiano Ronaldo and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The Dubai Crown Prince is the heir to the Godolphin team.
Kirsten Rausing – £12bn
Kirsten Rausing breeds horses from her farm Lanwades Stud in Newmarket, and she has overseen countless winners domestically and abroad throughout her career that has spanned four decades.
She is one of the richest women in Britain, with the Sunday Times Rich List 2019 placing her sixth alongside her brother Jörn with an estimated wealth of £12.25billion.
Her first stallion was Nijinsky horse Niniski, who sired the champion two-year-old Kala Dancer as well as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Petoski in his first crop of foals.

John Magnier – £2.5bn
John Magnier is often referred to as ‘The Boss’ due to his reputation in Ireland. He owns Coolmore Stud, a breeding operation in Fethard, that has since reaped plenty of economic benefits from the success of the farm – which is where his nickname stems from.
Magnier reportedly has a wealth of £2.5billion, amassed via a business portfolio including nursing home group Barchester Healthcare, pub group Mitchells & Butlers, and Luttrellstown Castle, where David and Victoria Beckham held their glamorous wedding.
Coolmore Stud is worth £4billion itself, and it was set up by his ancestors in the 1850s breeding champions like Sadler’s Wells and Danehill.
JP McManus – £2bn
JP McManus used to be a shareholder of Manchester United, and he is one of Ireland’s elite thoroughbred stud owners.
He is worth approximately £2billion, and he owns the renowned Jackdaws Castle farm in the Cotswolds, where trainer Jonjo O’Neill works. McManus has enjoyed plenty of success at Cheltenham Festival, with 50 winners there including 2017 Champion Hurdle winner Buveur d’Air.
McManus is a businessman but he certainly enjoys flexing his financial might. He famously challenged a fellow businessman to a game of Backgammon and won £15.2million in 2012.
He also spent £570,000 on Jonbon, a brother of Douvan who won his first race by 15 lengths.

The Queen – £350m
The Queen may not have the wealth of some of the other names on this list, but she is an established name within the horse racing community.
She has owned horses since 1952 after inheriting the breeding and racing stock owned by her father, King George VI.
The Queen has overseen nearly 2,000 winners during that time, and her horses have won each of the traditional British races except the Epsom Derby.
She is worth £350million, but it was reported last year that The Queen has made £7.7million from the sport in her lifetime.
