Mallory to follow Princess Series path before chasing Invitation
Trainer Gerald Ryan says he plans to nominate Mallory ‘for everything’ but has the Princess Series and potentially a berth in the $2m Invitation at the top of hit list for the classy filly this spring.
The Group 3 winner is back in work and is set to be put on a path to the Group 1 Flight Stakes on October 2 at Randwick where Mallory is rated a $15 chance in the fillies’ Group 1.
Ryan, who trains alongside Sterling Alexiou, has been keen to step Mallory over more ground since she was a juvenile and expects she will return an improved product.
“She has grown taller and is much stronger,” he said.
“She is doing well but with that said she‘s always been a good doer.
“I think she seems in a good space and we will follow the Princess Series path with her.”
The Princess Series kicks off with the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on August 21.
Mallory will head straight to the race after trialling at Rosehill last Friday afternoon where the daughter of Not A Single Doubt finished third under a strong hold.
“I thought it was a nice trial,” Ryan said.
“She bounced and travelled, was never off the bit and had a bit of a blow after.
“The girl who rode her, Kelly (Flynn), rides all her work unless she is having a serious gallop and she was quite happy with her.”
“We might give her another jump out at home in 10 days or so and then go another 10 days into the race.”
Another filly Ryan is excited about heading into the spring is Joyous Legend.
The daughter of Snitzel out of former gun mare More Joyous was last seen finishing third in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes and Ryan is set to target more stakes racing in the spring.
“She was due to trial next Friday at Randwick but won‘t be able to now because of Covid,” Ryan said.
“She is probably a couple of weeks behind Mallory but if she was to measure up, we would look at the Thousand Guineas.
“I know it‘s a cliche but she will be a better filly in the autumn.”
Joyous Legend doesn’t currently feature in Thousand Guineas betting but is on the same line of betting at $15 for the Flight Stakes.
The Thousand Guineas is staged 11 days after the Flight Stakes on Wednesday, October 13 at Caulfield.
