Goulburn preview: Tips, best bets and inside mail
Jason Coyle is relying on a lightly-raced up and comer Ribeauveille and stable stalwart Citizen’s Arrest to deliver him a double at Sunday’s Goulburn meeting.
Coyle has won numerous stakes races with horses racing in the Esplin family colours which will be worn in the Kilpatrick Metal Recyclers Maiden Plate (1315m) by the aforementioned Ribeauville.
The handsome bay gelding is a son of Sires’ and Champagne Stakes winner Helmet from a mare who is a close relation to Germany’s champion racehorse and sire, Manduro.

Coyle’s gelding signalled his emerging talent with a creditable fifth on debut at Goulburn making good ground late despite going off at $71.
“He ran really good,’’ Coyle said.
“I thought he was good through the line. He probably had to give up a spot or two from a wide barrier but it showed he was nice and strong late.
“He is a backward sort of horse that will just improve with racing. He is a big, strong horse, like I said he is a bit immature, but once he starts to step out over a little bit of ground, he might be able to graduate through his grades quite nicely.
“He gives every indication that he would easily step out to a mile and then have some sort of expectation that 2000m would be in his wheelhouse.’’

Ribeauville’s sire, Helmet won his Champagne Stakes on a Heavy 10, which bodes well for Coyle’s gelding given the prevailing conditions at Goulburn on Sunday.
“You can’t say he’s not a wet-tracker having never been tested on it, I suppose there is only way you can learn if they can handle it and that’s to expose them to those sort of tracks,’’ Coyle said.
There is no doubt about Citizen’s Arrest’s penchant for soft tracks, the near jet back daughter of Time Thief has won twice on heavy tracks from five runs compared to one from 26 starts on good surfaces.
“She definitely handles the surface,’’ Coyle said.
“Obviously first-up, condition may play a part as well but she is an old-stager with plenty of experience and she is the sort of mare than can be there or thereabouts in the finish.’’
Whereas her sire cost $2 million as a yearling, Coyle picked up Citizen’s Arrest for just $12,000 at the sales in 2015 and with earnings of over $100,000 and counting, she can readily be described as a bargain for her merry band of owners.
“She has been good to the stable and honest at a low level of racing,’’ Coyle said.
“She has done a great job. She is a lovely style of mare now too and has really furnished into a good looking horse.
“She looks fantastic and will look really good in someone’s paddock as a broodmare when the time comes I’m sure.”
Citizen’s Arrest resumes in the Goulburn Express Freight Handicap (1000m) from the outside barrier offset by the booking of an in-form Group 1 winning jockey in Alysha Collett.

Jay Ford has ridden more winners at Goulburn than any other racecourse and can easily add a few more to the tally.

INSIDE MAIL: GOULBURN
RACE 1
Formeinaway looked a good thing on paper here last start — hence the $1.55 SP — but ended up beating only one home in the small field. At the end of the day, they are horses not machines, so things happen. Blinkers go on first time; worth sticking with — he loves the slop! Princess Spie showed her true self when she won at Wagga first-up at the start of the second preparation. Presents as the big danger. True Valentine is back from a Warwick Farm mid-weeker.
Bet: Formeinaway win, exacta 1 to beat 4
RACE 2
Jay Ford has ridden more winners at Goulburn than at any other racetrack. He might be able to add another to the scorecard here in Princess Of Meydan. This cleverly-named daughter of Pride of Dubai has surely done enough in her career, trials and race-day, to win today. Just has to handle the wet now. Lemaire ran a really good race on debut back in January. The Zariz stock usually handle it. Mandalong Flag is a cracking type by Pierro.
Bet: Princess Of Meydan win
RACE 3
Fair to assume that Read All About It has had some issues in life, given that he is a seven-year-old with just 13 starts under the belt. There have been times he has done some pretty remarkable things and other times, less so. We saw how much he relished the Heavy 8 last start. Scalded has raced four times on heavy tracks for two wins and a second. Has to go in. The blowout is Citizen’s Arrest, who has conditions to suit.
Bet: Read All About It win, Citizen’s Arrest place
RACE 4
Masked Maree was bordering on a good thing beaten at Nowra two starts ago — sometimes barrier 1 is not all it’s cracked up to be! No issues a week later here, she got a gem of a ride and showed much desire to win. On the up. Rathvilly Miss is city class, she has no issues at all on heavy and she’s got Keagan Lathan and box 2. Shadow Chaser won on a Heavy 1 at Kembla early on and is a last start winner coming into this.
Bet: Masked Maree win
RACE 5
Ribeauville is a horse with a future once he gets out to a mile and 2000m after that. The Jason Coyle-trained gelding was $71 but ran a much better race than his SP on debut here on April 27, hitting the line well. Goes 1200m to 1315m now. Hartzer Park, likewise, will appreciate the step up to 1315m and closed off nicely to clock in a distant third in a 1000m race at Queanbeyan. Marcassin certainly did enough in the first prep to entertain.
Bet: Ribeauville each-way, Daily Double 1st leg (8), 2nd leg (2)
RACE 6
Majestic Wings is another of Jay Ford’s top rides today — this one a daughter of Epaulette who is trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou. The filly has clearly come back in good nick with each of her three runs better than the last, and that bodes well for her today given she was runner-up here just 12-days ago. Jonjo’s Comet has only won two from 31, but the son of Tickets has placed ten times — and two of those placings were at this venue. Happy Hustler can figure.
Bet: Majestic Wings win
RACE 7
Caesars Palace is bred, (part) owned and trained by Anthony Cummings who trained both the sire, Casino Prince and the dam Soffraaj. Caesars Palace is building up to a win and put the writing on the wall that today is the day, when runner-up to Go Troppo here on April 27. Take note that Go Troppo was runner-up in the Wagga Guineas on Friday. Social Distancing is perfectly placed to win and should race prominently throughout. They look the two.
Bet: Caesars Place win, exacta 2 to beat 11
