Godolphin, James Cummings face losing group 1 win over positive swab

Racing powerhouse Godolphin and head trainer James Cummings risk being stripped of a valuable group 1 win after Racing NSW stewards announced an inquiry into last year’s Canterbury Stakes, won by mare Savatiano.

In the same week this year’s Canterbury Stakes is due to be run, the fate of last year’s result will hinge on the results of a hearing on Tuesday after stewards confirmed Savatiano had returned an irregular urine sample.

The mare, whose only group 1 success came in the Canterbury Stakes, was found to contain the prohibited substances trendione, trenbolone and epitrenbolone. Stewards will consider whether Savatiano will be disqualified at the hearing.

Racing NSW issued a charge against Cummings in January – two days after Godolphin and Cummings made submissions to the regulator over the irregular sample.

Mizzy, trained by James’ father Anthony, was second past the post behind Savatiano in last year’s Canterbury Stakes.

The race was the last win of Savatiano’s career before she was retired to stud.
