Gai Waterhouse, Ciaron Maher, Peter Moody and others announced among The Racing League trainers
Some of the biggest names in racing will make up the training ranks in the inaugural season of The Racing League.
The likes of Gai Waterhouse, Ciaron Maher and Peter Moody are among the big names announced as trainers for the new micro ownership concept.
The Racing League is the brainchild of MiRunners boss Steve Brown and sees teams from each state go up against each other.
Teams, known as NSW Tycoons, Qld Rogues, Vic Husslers and WA Black Hearts, each have stables comprising of six horses – four yearlings and two ready to race horses with micro owners buying into the horses.
The trainers announcement was made at the Magic Millions Sales where trainers will help determine potential yearling purchases for the respective teams at the sales starting on Tuesday.
“We are really very thankful for the opportunity,” Adrian Bott, who trains alongside Gai Waterhouse, said.
“We are looking forward to bringing new owners into the game. It is a difficult aspect and we are always looking for new ways to do that.
“I think all the trainers that are up here today would all agree that finding new owners and trying to attract ownership is one of the toughest things of our job.
“Finding new ways to get that investment is the best thing for the industry.”
Trainers were asked to pitch for their place in The Racing League and staked their claim for a spot via video auditions.
Moody, the trainer of superstar sprinter Black Caviar, called upon the services of former AFL star Shane Crawford after campaigning to become a member of the Husslers despite his Queensland roots.
The Racing League chief executive Steve Brown admits he was pleasantly surprised to see the response from the training community.
“We didn’t know how it was going to go,” he said.
“The Racing League is a first and part of the many firsts that are part of the concept we actually turned it on its head and asked trainers to pitch to owners as opposed to the tradition where owners pitch to trainers.
“To see some of the best trainers in the country go to the efforts that they went to was amazing.”
