Former champion apprentice Winona Costin has suffered severe facial injuries in Gundagai incident
Former champion Sydney apprentice Winona Costin remains in hospital with serious facial injuries following an incident at Gundagai races on Sunday.
Costin was dislodged from her mount behind the barriers before race three, the Margaret Keenan Memorial 3YO Maiden Handicap (1000m).
The 2014/15 Sydney apprentice premiership winner sustained several head injuries while attempting to hold onto the reins of her mount Superior Power.
She was transported to Wagga Hospital with injuries to her jaw, face and a severe laceration to her nose.
Scans later confirmed Costin had suffered fractures to her face, nose and Maxilla that would need further repair as well as stitches to the wound on her nose.
She was kept in Wagga overnight and will be transferred to Sydney on Tuesday.
It’s a tough blow for Costin, who was on track to chalk up her best season as a senior rider before this latest injury.
She had got her day off to the perfect start winning the opener on Gundagai Cup Day aboard the James Ponsonby-trained Morgenstern.
Costin has ridden 46 winners for the season, two short of her previous best as a senior jockey in 2018/19.
