Enthaar snaps recent peculiarity in Victorian juvenile races

Enthaar bucked a recent oddity when she waltzed away first up at Caulfield on Saturday, tightening her grip on Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper favouritism and in every way looking a budding star.

Interestingly, she defied a recent trend of juveniles off a last start Sydney run underperforming in Victoria.

In Victorian two-year-old stakes races since 2017, there had been just one winner from 29 runners ranked 1-4 in the market off a last start Sydney run.

So often we see an early season juvenile star fail to live up to the hype when they resume and the poor record of favourites resuming supports that. Enthaar’s win on Saturday suggests she’s not going to fall into that category.

The daughter of Written Tycoon looks poised to give her sire a second Diamond win in four years, following Written By in 2018.

ISSUE DEAD AND BURIED

The dead heat in the last at Caulfield was keenly discussed.

Many punters felt Defibrillate should have gained the verdict outright and images floating on social media seemed to give weight to their theory.

But my money is on the judge getting the decision right.

I’ve seen numerous times where an image displayed on screen and then blown up for different forms of media can become pixelated and create an impression the result was different to what was declared.

But viewing the image the judges are working off provides a much clearer context of what happened.

The stewards’ report noted correct weight was delayed while they and connections viewed the image and they were happy to go with the judge’s decision.

ON FOR YOUNG AND OLE

The Hawkes stable is likely to hedge their bets with Caulfield Guineas winner Ole Kirk this weekend, with the valuable colt to be nominated for both Sydney and Melbourne.

Down south the option is the Group 1 Orr Stakes, a race Team Hawkes won with another of their Caulfield Guineas winners, All Too Hard, in 2013. If he stays in Sydney, the Eskimo Prince is the likely starting point.

Stablemate North Pacific, who played second fiddle to Ole Kirk in the Golden Rose, will also resume this weekend, with the $1 million Inglis 3YO Sprint the favoured option.

Bondi winner Peltzer is also set to resume on Saturday, with the Eskimo Prince his kick off point.

THE QUOTE

“Sepoy, he had a really good turn of foot and I think this filly has more speed, I reckon.” Mark Zahra comparing Enthaar with Sepoy, who was ridden by Kerrin McEvoy to win the Blue Diamond. “They’re both very good horses and at least this one I’ll be able to stay on for grand final day.”

THE TALKING POINT

The track intruder at Trentham generated the most discussion on Saturday. It was a miracle he managed to walk away unscathed. And for that he has the jockeys whose lives he put in danger to thank. Their skill in skirting around him avoided a potential disaster.

THE RIDE

Eight metro winners in 10 days for five different stables for Michael Rodd, rounded out with a Sunshine Coast treble on Saturday, including the feature on Emerald Kingdom.

THREE TO BACK

Modelka, Race 1: Split two handy ones. Good return.

Little River, Race 2: Measured up like the market suggested. 1200m next time.

Kylease, Race 9: Unwanted in market but too good. Makes her own luck, which will win her more races.

RISK

TAMBO’S MATE (RACE 9): Was a monster firmer, but the early market framers had it right. Lost a hind plate, but he’s a way between wins now.

THE FLOP

Divulge, Race 7: Had poor post race recovery and was making abnormal respiratory noise. Is to undergo an endoscopic examination. Clearly better than this.

SHARP SHOOTERS

Bookies had the best of it for most of the day, but the love punters have had for Emerald Kingdom all summer was finally rewarded in the Cup.
