Brae Sokolski, part-owner of Melbourne Cup-winning mare Verry Elleegant, has been fined $10,000 for breaching Flemington’s strict COVID-19 protocols after Tuesday’s race.

Sokolski, who was allowed in Flemington’s green zone, jumped the mounting yard fence to greet the returning horse and jockey after Verry Elleegant’s victory, leaping into an area reserved for jockeys, trainers, media and other race-day officials.

Sokolski apologised afterwards, admitting that adrenalin got the better of him as he hurdled the fence near Ten’s broadcast area, and raced into the mounting yard to be near Verry Elleegant when she returned to scale.

He was not planning to attend the races on Thursday or Saturday as he had other commitments to fulfil.
