Adayar, the Charlie Appleby-trained 2021 Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner, has been retired to stud.
Saturday’s King George had been on the five-year-old’s agenda until a below-par second to Israr in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month.
Adayar, who was also fourth in the 2021 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, was restricted to two runs last season by a respiratory infection, winning a minor event at Doncaster before finishing second to Bay Bridge in the Champion Stakes.
He won the Group Three Gordon Richards Stakes on his first start this season but his three runs this year were well below his peak performances.
Adam Kirby, who rode Adayar to victory in the Derby, said: ‘He will always hold a special place in my heart as he gave me the biggest win of my career. He had a very high cruising speed and he could really quicken and keep lengthening, which takes a bit of doing.’
