Caulfield Guineas winner headlines Rosehill nominations

Dual Group 1 winner Ole Kirk has been installed as the horse to beat with bookies in Saturday’s Group 2 Expressway Stakes in what is shaping as an early taste of the upcoming Sydney carnival.

A small but competitive list of nine horses were announced among the nominations for the 1200m Rosehill feature with the John, Wayne and Michael Hawkes-trained galloper one of several Group 1 winners.

Bookmakers TAB.com.au were quick to make Ole Kirk the $4 outright favourite for the Expressway in their ‘all in’ market on Monday afternoon.

The Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas victor holds top billing from Godolphin mare Savatiano and 2020 Expressway Stakes winner Standout (both $5).

James Cummings will launch a two-pronged attack in the sprint with former Thousand Guineas winner Flit also set to resume and the mare is a $6 chance.

Leading trainer Chris Waller plans to have two starters in the Expressway with Star Of The Seas ($7) and Kolding ($9) both lining up.

Resuming mare Mizzy ($11), Group 3 winner Emeralds ($15) and the John O’Shea-trained Southern Lad ($26) round out an impressive list of nominations for the feature race.

Meanwhile, the Group 3 Widden Stakes has attracted 14 fillies while the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes has 15 colts and geldings.

Final fields will be released on Wednesday morning.
