Golf great Tiger Woods has been urged by his fellow American star Will Zalatoris to apply for a cart exemption from the PGA Tour in order to prolong his career. Woods has played in just three events since the start of 2021, all coming in the past campaign at the Masters, PGA Championship and Open Championship.

This comes after the 15-time major winner opted to make his playing career a part-time one, as he continues to recover from the injuries he sustained in a car crash in February 2021. Following his return this year, it has been more than clear to see Woods is still struggling from the effects of the accident.

His initial comeback came at the Masters in April, and whilst the 82-time PGA Tour winner made the cut and completed all four rounds he was seen limping throughout the gruelling test around Augusta National. His next event saw him withdraw from the PGA Championship due to injury, before missing the cut at The Open in July.

Of course all PGA Tour players compete on the circuit by walking the course, rather than making their way round on a cart. There are certain exemptions players can apply for to use a cart in competition and Zalatoris has urged Woods to do that in order to prolong his career.

Speaking to NBC, the 26-year-old said: “The part that amazes me is that he has such a hard time walking, but man he can still play some good golf. Tiger could get a cart if he wants to but you know he is never going to take it because that is who he is.”

Whilst he – like the majority of the golfing world – are urging the 82-time Tour winner to return, Zalatoris feels his request may be a selfish one. He went on: “I am like selfishly [saying] ‘dude get in the cart I want to play with you!” As mentioned by the American, Zalatoris has never had the opportunity to play alongside Woods, with his rise to fame coming during the 15-time major winner’s spell away from the course.

But, the former PGA Tour Rookie of The Year is hoping that he will still be able to play with Woods before the 46-year-old calls time on his career. He commented: “I would love to play with Tiger at least once before he is done, done. Just to do it and I know that would be an amazing experience as even at the PGA [Championship] I played in front of him the first two days.

“We had more people with us because people would come up to our group to follow us so they can get a better look when Tiger rolls through, than I had when playing in the final group on Saturday.”
