Golf icon and PGA Tour stalwart Rory McIlroy launched a stinging attack on the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series after winning £15.4million and the FedEx Cup. The 33-year-old four-time major winner put in a stunning performance at Atlanta coming from six shots down on the final day to beat world number one Scottie Scheffler.

The battle between two of the sport’s stars resulted in McIlroy hitting a final round of 66 to come storming back to win the PGA Tour Championship with a score of –21, one shot clear of Scheffler and Korea’s Sungjae Im. Afterwards McIlroy who has been firmly behind the PGA Tour in their battle against the rival LIV Golf hit out at the opposing series.

He said: “I hate what it’s doing to the game of golf. I hate it. I really do. I believe in the game of golf, I believe in this Tour in particular, I believe in the players on this Tour. It’s the greatest place in the world to play golf, bar none, and I’ve played all over the world.

“This is an incredibly proud moment for me but it should also be an incredibly proud moment for the PGA Tour. They have had some hard times this year but we are getting through it and that was a spectacle out there today.

“Two of the best players in the world going head-to-head for the biggest prize on the PGA Tour and I hope everyone at home enjoyed that.” A group of LIV golfers won an injunction allowing them to play on the DP World Tour events including the BMW PGA Championship which takes place at Wentworth next Tuesday (September 6).

With the PGA Tour now finished for the season there could be more defectors to the rival series in the coming weeks. LIV Golf members Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia will be amongst those set to play at Wentworth.

McIlroy added: “It’s going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks’ time and seeing 18 of them there. That just doesn’t sit right with me.

“So yeah, I feel strongly. I believe what I’m saying are the right things and I think when you believe that what you’re saying is the right things, you’re happy to stick your neck out on the line.”
