One of the most highly anticipated exhibition events of any golf calendar returns on Friday as Tiger Woods and son Charlie prepare to team up for the PNC Championship. A pro-am competition precedes a weekend of back-to-back rounds at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida.
Although the PNC Championship is framed as a ‘Father-Son’ contest, the two-player team format has become slightly more malleable in recent years. Olympic gold medallist Nelly Korda will play alongside her father Petr, while LPGA Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam teams up with her son, Will McGee.
The tournament will be played using a scramble format, which means both players on each two-person team drive off the tee before continuing with the best shot. That same policy extends to every shot that follows until each team holes the ball.
Friday’s session will involve the pro-am competition before the action gets underway in earnest on Saturday. John Daly and his son, Little John, enter this year’s field as the defending champions after they pipped Team Woods by two strokes in the 2021 contest.

A 15-under-par 57 on the last day of the competition helped the Dalys set a new tournament record of 27-under. “Every year we always try and win, but this was the year we just enjoyed it and being here playing with him in the holidays,” said Daly II. “I guess that’s what happens, when you win.”
Justin Thomas and his dad, Mike, will also be targeting top honours in Florida after winning the PNC Championship in 2020. They’ll be the last to tee off after being paired against Team Woods in Saturday’s opening round as the two PGA stars put their firm friendship to one side.
Much has been made of Woods’ mobility—or lack thereof—since suffering serious injuries in his February 2021 car crash. Even with a buggy for assistance, it may in fact be 13-year-old son Charlie who ends up impressing most in that particular duo.

Clinching a major (or the Players Championship) is the major prerequisite needed in order to receive an invite to the PNC Championship. That guarantees a certain level of quality among the contenders, with Jordan Spieth and Nick Faldo also part of this year’s class.
Visit the official PGA website for a full line-up of the 20 teams set to compete in this year’s family fracas. The total prize purse for the Florida tournament will be £892,000 ($1.085million), £164,000 (£200,000) of which goes to the winners.
