Golfer Justin Rose has been awarded the Payne Stewart Award by the PGA Tour in recognition of his character, sportsmanship, and charity work.

Rose will officially be honoured by the PGA Tour at this year’s FedEx Cup play-off finale, the Tour Championshi which is set to get underway at East Lake Golf Club on September 2.

The award has been presented annually by the PGA Tour since 2000 after Payne Stewart tragically died during the week of the 1999 Tour Championship. Stewart was an 11-time PGA Tour champion, and also earned a place in golf’s prestigious Hall of Fame.

As a result Stewart was known for his impeccable sportsmanship and character, as well as his extensive charitable work, and therefore the Tour founded the award in his memory, awarding it to a Tour golfer who best exemplifies his values each year.

Commenting on his acceptance of the award Rose said: “I am truly humbled and honored to be associated with the enduring legacy of Payne Stewart through this award.

“The Payne Stewart Award has become an annual celebration of Payne’s impact on the PGA TOUR and its players. I am forever grateful to be connected to a man who was the consummate professional on and off the golf course and will cherish being a Payne Stewart Award recipient well after my playing days are over.”

In a video released by the PGA Tour, the 2013 US Open champion was told of his award by Stewart’s wife Tracey Stewart and son Aaron Stewart.

Speaking to the Stewart family he said: “Tracey my heart is pounding, Aaron wow. Listen, I’ve been fortunate to be at the ceremony a couple of times and obviously the honour of that award is definitely not lost upon me – my heart is racing – and quite honestly to have that link with your family and your dad is a huge honour.

“To see how you guys carried on his legacy and the values he stands for lived on with you and your family, but the way you have brought up Aaron and Chelsea is a huge inspiration so to have his link to your family forever more now is something incredibly special.”

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monohan also paid tribute to Rose following his acceptance and was full of praise for the 2021 recipient.

Monohan said: “Justin Rose embodies everything the Payne Stewart Award represents. Like Payne, he has been one of the premier players of his generation while using his platform to better the lives of those around him.

“The inspiring progress that he and Kate have made through their family’s foundation is a terrific representation of how Payne chose to focus his efforts away from the golf course, by giving back and treating people the right way.”

After winning the award Rose is also given £216,000 ($300,000) to designate to his chosen charity. As a result the 11-time PGA Tour winner will donate the amount to the organisation formed by himself and his wife, The Kate & Justin Rose foundation.

The foundation aims to ‘feed hungry tummies and curious minds’ as it looks to provide healthy nutrition and positive educational experience to children in Central Florida. Since forming in 2009, the charity has raised more than £2.1 million (£3m), provided more than 500,000 hunger-free weekends, and more than 300,000 books to 29,000 children.

Rose and wife Kate are also known for their extensive work back home in the UK, after the pair founded the Rose Ladies Series last summer, providing female golfers with an opportunity to play across the country after Tours were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The  Series has also returned for 2021, attracting some of the biggest names in women’s golf for 11 daily tournaments that coincide with breaks on the Ladies European Tour.
