Former world No 1 golfer Dustin Johnson has taken yet another sly dig at critics of his decision to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour, joking that he is ‘really regretting’ moving to the ‘terrible’ rebel series.

Johnson’s sarcastic comments come just days after he took his earnings with LIV to $30million – in less than five months and just six tournaments.

The American is currently in Jeddah ahead of the latest Invitational series, and he has already been crowned the inaugural champion of the tour’s first season.

That latest individual title secured an $18m bonus on top of his $12,758,600 winnings from earlier tournaments – and on top of that, he is reported to have pocketed a lucrative $125m signing-on fee for his initial controversial defection.

Johnson said it has been ‘terrible’ – just days after taking his earnings to $30million already

With that in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising to see Johnson looking pretty happy with himself, and he made that clear in his latest pre-tournament press conference.

Standing alongside Graeme McDowell and Harold Varner III at Royal Greens Golf Country Club in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, Johnson was asked ‘how he would describe this four-and-a-half-month journey’.

In response, he told reporters: ‘I don’t know, we were talking about this yesterday. I was really regretting my decision to come here, it’s just been terrible.

‘I was sitting there last night thinking about it, it’s really bothered me a lot. I just can’t get over it.’

Johnson heaped praise on his wife Paulina Gretzky after his latest big-money golf win

Johnson has already earned more in six tournaments than he has ever done in an entire PGA Tour season, but the defectors have received much criticism over their decision to join a tour funded by Saudi Arabian money, given their awful human rights record.

The 38-year-old American is married to Paulina Gretzky, daughter of hockey legend Wayne, and the pair tied the knot in a plush ceremony in Tennessee earlier this year.

Speaking after his latest cash haul in Bangkok last week, Johnson was quick to name-check his wife in his speech.

‘Locking up the individual competition is big,’ he said. ‘It’s an honor to be LIV’s first individual season champion.

‘I’d like to thank Greg Norman and LIV for their confidence in me, my brother and caddie Austin, my wife Paulina, my 4 Aces team-mates Pat [Perez], Patrick [Reed], and Talor [Gooch], as well as LIV’s growing legion of fans around the world.

‘Our team is in a really good position with two events to go and I’m looking forward to further contributing to LIV Golf’s exciting story and continued growth.’
