DEREK LAWRENSON: Lee Westwood has proved he's not greedy or disloyal
DEREK LAWRENSON: Saudi rebel Lee Westwood has proved over the years he’s NOT greedy or disloyal… the Englishman will shun the States to add star appeal to the British Masters this week as he has done for past 29 years
- Lee Westwood wants to play in the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational series
- He asked to be released from the PGA and DP World Tour to play in first event
- The Englishman, 49, will be at the Belfry for the British Masters on Thursday
Isn’t Lee Westwood a ‘greedy so and so’ for accepting the filthy Saudi lucre?
‘Disloyal’ for ignoring the pleas of DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley and turning his back on his home circuit?
Excuse me from joining in the outrage.
Regular readers will know I couldn’t be more against the rebel circuit and everything for which it stands. It’s all about naked greed. But accusing Westy of disloyalty would be taking it too far.
Lee Westwood has requested a release to play the first LIV Golf Invitational Series
Westwood is easily the biggest name who’s turning up at the Belfry on Thursday to support the BetFred British Masters, the first event of the season on UK soil.
It’s been that way for the past 29 years. All the other Englishmen of similar standing have professed their love of this event or love of playing in Britain over the years, but Westy is the only one who always shows up.
Like the others, he could be in Washington this week playing for a prize fund six times the amount on offer in the Midlands. Instead he’s here, adding lustre to an event in desperate need of star appeal.
Greedy and disloyal? He’s the one Saudi rebel whose illustrious career stands as testament to the contrary.
Westwood has asked both Tours for the release required to contest the event in June
