Aussie’s stunning PGA winner’s cheque

Sydneysider Cameron Davis and Victorian Lucas Herbert capped a rare week for Australian golfers around the world by winning massive titles on the lucrative US PGA Tour and European Tours within hours of each other.

Australians executed a global assault on golf’s major tours, with Davis and Herbert’s victories coming in the same weekend as Sydney product Steph Kyriacou’s triumph at the Ladies European Tour’s Big Green Egg Open in The Netherlands, while star Queensland teenager Louis Dobbelaar also won the historic North and South Amateur in the US.

The 26-year-old Davis, from Sydney’s northern beaches, endured a five-hole playoff against American Troy Merritt to claim his maiden US PGA Tour victory in Detroit, Michigan at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Davis produced an eagle and a birdie in his final two holes of regulation to force a playoff, before ultimately claiming victory with a two-putt par on the fifth extra hole when Merritt missed a par putt to extend.

Davis – who won the 2017 Australian Open and 2018 Nashville Open on the secondary Korn Ferry Tour – pocketed a whopping $A1.8m winner’s cheque and a debut in next year’s Masters at Augusta National.

Just hours before that, some 5,700km away across the Atlantic Ocean, Bendigo native Herbert secured a wire-to-wire victory at the prestigious Irish Open.

The 25-year-old led after every round at Kilkenny’s Mount Juliet golf course and a closing four-under 68 on the final day was enough for a three-shot win against Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg.

Herbert also grabbed an 11th hour spot at the Open Championship at Royal St George’s GC in England later this month.

It was Herbert’s second title on the European Tour, having won the elite Dubai Desert Classic in January 2020.

Also in Europe, rising star Kyriacou, from Botany in Sydney’s south, strode to her second Ladies European Tour title in the Netherlands.

Kyriacou produced a bogey-free round of 67 to win at Rosendaelsche Golf Club, her 18 under par total two better than Finland‘s Sanna Nuutinen (-16).

It was Kyriacou’s second LET title, having won the co-sanctioned Ladies Bonville Classic at Coffs Harbour when she was still an amateur last year.

While not on a professional tour, Dobbelaar took out one of the most heralded amateur events in the US when he won the 121st edition of the North and South Amateur championship at North Carolina’s famed Pinehurst Resort.

Sporting his trademark mullet, the 19-year-old from Ipswich defeated American Jackson Van Paris when he mad a clutch par save on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Dobbelaar, who calls fellow Queenslander and US PGA Tour star Cameron Smith a mentor, also won the highly regarded Dogwood Invitational amateur event in Atlanta, Georgia last month.
