  • Shane Warne believes fellow leg-spinner would go well on the Ashes tour

Shane Warne has backed Lancashire leg-spinner Matt Parkinson to play in the first Ashes Test at Brisbane in December, insisting he is ‘perfectly suited to Australian conditions’.

Parkinson, who played in five of the six white-ball matches against Pakistan recently, has taken 24 wickets at 19 in this summer’s county championship – including a leg-break to dismiss Northamptonshire captain Adam Rossington that went viral and earned comparisons to Warne’s ‘Ball of the Century’ to Mike Gatting in 1993.

He is yet to play Test cricket.

Matt Parkinson has what it takes to thrive on an Ashes tour for England, says Shane Warne

‘I think Parkinson is very, very good,’ said Warne, who is coaching London Spirit in the Hundred.

‘He’s a great addition to England’s white-ball cricket, but I think he can also play a huge part in Test cricket, especially in Australia.

‘I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s actually pencilled into the playing XI for that first Test match at the Gabba.

‘With the pace he bowls, and the amount of bounce and spin he gets, he’s perfectly suited to Australian conditions. He’s got a big role to play.

‘A lot of people will have told him to bowl faster, but he’s stuck to being true to himself and what he’s good at.

‘If you can spin the ball, you’ll be successful, no matter what form of the game. I think he bowls a beautiful pace.’
