Mills was midway through his second over in the Super 12s group game against Sri Lanka in Sharjah on Monday evening when he abruptly pulled up in his delivery stride before limping off the field.
The news continues the terrible luck he has had with injuries throughout his career, which have resulted in him being overlooked by England for more than four years before this tournament.
He was diagnosed with a congenital back condition in 2015, with his vertebrae and his spinal cord too close to one another and leading to him focusing on the shorter format of the game.

He revealed he spent three months of last winter in a back brace after suffering another stress fracture, but he was one of the stars of the inaugural edition of The Hundred in the summer, leading to his inclusion in the UAE after a four-year absence.
Now his injury comes as England’s first major blow in the tournament, having recorded their fourth win from four against Sri Lanka on Monday.
The victory saw them all but qualify for the semi-finals and they are well on their way to topping Group 1, with the likes of Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid firing for Eoin Morgan’s men.
Wicketkeeper batsman Buttler smashed his first T20 century in international cricket in Sharjah, while Rashid impressed once more with two wickets for just 19 runs in Sri Lanka’s reply.

England now face South Africa on Saturday in their first game following the news of Mills’ injury, who is the third bowling option to have struggled with injury before and during the tournament.
Mark Wood is yet to feature after needing an ankle injection before England’s hammering of West Indies, while Sam Curran was replaced in the squad by brother and fellow all-rounder Tom following a back problem.m
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Topley – who has suffered four stress fractures himself in his career – has taken five wickets in six T20I innings at an average of below 35.
