Sydney Swans star’s act of sheer class footy world overlooked

Lost in the post-mortem to the Swans’ shock ambush of Richmond on Saturday was Sydney star Dane Rampe’s incredible act of care for Tiger Kamdyn McIntosh.

Rampe was seen instantly turning his back as play unfolded behind him after a sickening collision with McIntosh as they both dived in for a loose ball in the middle of the MCG.

McIntosh suffered an ugly head injury and had to be helped from the ground after the fourth quarter collision in the Swans’ emphatic 10.12 (72) to 17.15 (117). victory on Saturday against the reigning premiers.

Replays have since shown Rampe immediately called for the doctors to attend to McIntosh after the Richmond star was left motionless lying on his back in an incident where Rampe’s shoulder crashed into his opponent’s head.

Rampe stayed with McIntosh until members of Richmond’s medical staff could get onto the ground to assess his condition.

Play had continued briefly behind Rampe as the Swans went inside fifty with a nice chip to a leading Luke Parker before play was eventually stopped.

The Swans co-captain also embraced McIntosh after Richmond trainers had got the concussed player to his feet before he was eventually helped from the ground and taken straight into the MCG tunnel.

The incident came with the contest already over as the Swans marched on towards a comfortable victory.

It was a rare capitulation for the Tigers, who conceded 100 points before three-quarter time for the first time since 2017.

Pundits were stunned by the Swans’ effort online, labelling the performance “outrageous” and “unbelievable”.

“Enormous pressure from the young Bloods and capitalised on the dominance through the midfield in that 2nd term,” Swans legend Jude Bolton tweeted.

“Beware the Swan,” wrote House Husbands actor Rhys Muldoon.

“Came here thinking Sydney could win today, but not like this. Holy hell,” added journalist James Mottershead.

Commentators were left similarly gobsmacked.

“This is not the Richmond we’ve seen over the last few years,” Brisbane Lions legend Jonathan Brown said on Fox Footy’s coverage.

“Sydney have been outstanding but this is very sloppy from the Tigers.”

“It’s a nice little reminder that things might be different this year because of the way the game has been played and (Richmond) might have to change the way they play,” added Garry Lyon.

“There is a reason three premierships in a row is rarely done because it’s hard to stay at that level for so long.”

The win continues Sydney’s unbeaten run in 2021. They’ll look to make it four victories in a row when they face Essendon at home next Thursday night.
