Stuart Broad shocked Marnus Labuschagne to dismiss the world No 1 Test batter for a golden duck on Saturday morning, but the Englishman had warned him about a specially-designed delivery months ago.
Broad, 36, sent Edgbaston into jubilation after dismissing David Warner and Labuschagne in consecutive balls, putting Australia on the back foot as they attempt to eat into England’s first innings total of 393.
Labuschagne nibbled at an outswinging peach of a delivery from Broad, and Jonny Bairstow reacted quickly behind the stumps to take a brilliant catch.
But Broad had warned of the delivery back in April, having worked with Nottinghamshire coach Kevin Shine on a ball specifically designed for Labuschagne and Steve Smith.
Speaking after dismissing Cameron Bancroft in a County Championship match, Broad told ESPNCricinfo: ‘It’s designed, to be honest, for Marnus [Labuschagne] and [Steve] Smith.

The world No 1 Test batter cuts a dejected figure after losing his wicket cheaply
‘It’s the reason I wanted to change something, to try and bring their outside edge in more.
‘My stock delivery will always be wobble seam trying to nip back on off stump, because I think that’s the most dangerous ball. But to those guys, I think dragging them across with away swing is important.
‘So this action tweak is pretty much designed at those two, and it was good to see it really swinging away today.’
