Star footy commentator brutally shut down by AFL great

Footy commentator Brian Taylor got a blunt response from Hawks champion Luke Hodge on Friday night after asking an honest question.

The Channel 7 commentators were in fine form during Geelong’s win over the Tigers at the MCG, but Taylor was forced to recover from a first quarter tongue-lashing.

The popular caller wasn’t convinced that a contested mark by Shane Edwards against Geelong’s Gary Rohan in the Cats’ forward line should have gone down in the stats sheet as an intercept mark.

When the 59-year-old asked Hodge why Edwards’ mark was classified as an intercept mark, he got given a lesson.

“Here’s another intercept mark, that’s the fifth intercept mark for Richmond and Geelong haven’t had one yet,” Hodge said in the first quarter.

Taylor then raised his doubts.

“Why is that an intercept mark Hodgey, given he was playing on him? Isn’t it just a mark,” he said.

Hodge’s reply was gold: “Well when they kick it BT, and they intercept it, it’s an intercept mark”.

Taylor wasn’t convinced.

“He was just playing one on one with his man and he marked it,” he said.

Hodge replied: “That’s a mark and it was intercepted because they (Geelong) kicked it.”

It is far from the first time Hodge has been short with Taylor.

In a game last year, Hodge got snarky in a post-game segment when Taylor pushed Hodge and Wayne Carey about their predictions for the flag.

Hodge took exception to Taylor saying the former Lions player had ruled out Port Adelaide as premiership contenders.

“BT, stop putting words in my mouth,” he said.

Cats great Jimmy Bartel also got annoyed with Taylor last year when asked to explain why a game between the Swans and Tigers had been such a dull, low-scoring encounter.

When Taylor said he wasn’t satisfied with Bartel’s first explanation, the Brownlow medallist said coldly: “But that’s why the game’s been slowed down, because Richmond’s been sitting back in defence and the Swans are just keeping the ball. Are you happy with that or do you want to go back to jumpers?”

Never a dull moment in the Channel 7 commentary box.
