Sachin Tendulkar & Shane Warne react to India's thrilling win over Australia
Shane Warne has hailed India’s thrilling series win over Australia at the Gabba as the greatest Test match he has ever seen while Sachin Tendulkar had lauded India’s ‘heroes’ for their remarkable display.
The injury-hit tourists, playing with virtually a second-string side, pulled off a truly thrilling run chase – the biggest ever in Brisbane – to inflict Australia’s first defeat at the Gabba since 1988.
India needed 328 to win on the final day and had Shubman Gill’s 98 and Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 89 to thank for securing a 2-1 series victory to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy, rattling off the final runs in a pulsating finale.
Australia legend Warne was blown away by India’s performance, with few people giving them a chance going into the final day, and thinks there could be a big fallout for the home side.
‘Oh absolutely it will hurt for the Australians but you’ve got to say well done to India,’ said the former spin bowler on BT Sport.
‘I’ve just been thinking there about some of the great Test matches I’ve seen and played in, some of the great series, I think that’s as good as Test match win as I can remember.
‘I can’t remember a better Test match win in recent times. It was all stacked against them.
‘They deserved to win that though India. They were the best side in this whole series.
‘They got bowled out for 36 [in the first Test at Adelaide]! And to come back and do what they’ve done, they’ve been depleted, their captain [Virat Kohli] went home.
‘There will be plenty of questions for the Australians, plenty of fallout for Australia, but lets just take a moment to say well done India. That was absolutely outstanding.’
India legend Tendulkar was equally glowing in his praise of his compatriots, highlighting the enormous aversity they had to overcome en route to a famous series win.
‘Every session we discovered a new hero,’ Tendulkar tweeted.
‘Every time we got hit, we stayed put and stood taller. We pushed boundaries of belief to play fearless but not careless cricket.
‘Injuries and uncertainties were countered with poise and confidence. One of the greatest series wins! Congrats India.’
