Report rubbishes AFL star’s ‘ridiculous’ $1m pay cut
A new report states Carlton captain Patrick Cripps has not taken a pay cut in his new six-year contract and will in fact be on $1 million next season.
It was widely reported the 26-year-old had sacrificed up to $1 million – based on his current salary of between $900,000 and $950,000 – and would be on around $750,000 a season over the course of the new deal.
The move was lauded as it would allow the Blues to add more talent in their quest for a premiership, while also reducing the risk of Carlton having to carry a hefty contract for a midfielder who already plays hurt and whose on-field form is trending in the wrong direction.

But The Age’s Sam McClure claims Cripps’ deal is front-loaded and on average he will earn $900,000 per season over the six years, putting his value closer to $5.4 million.
“He’s not on $750,000 (per season). No one actually believes Patrick Cripps has taken a pay cut, do they? And nor should he have by the way,” McClure said on 3AW’s Sportsday.
“He’s on $1 million next year. I think he’s on $750,000 later in his contract, but I think it would average out to $900,000.
“That’s about right though. Why would Cripps who has carried that place for the best part of four years take a pay cut to stay there? That would be ridiculous.
“I would guess that there are certain people who are trying to get a story out there that Cripps has taken a pay cut for the betterment of the club, which is fine, but the facts are, I would suggest, that he has not taken a pay cut and nor should he.
“He should be getting paid the most money at Carlton, I think that’s pretty clear.”

Last week Cripps told reporters he was taking less money on his new contract.
“It was always what’s best for the club,” Cripps told AAP.
“We want success and I feel like we’ve got a lot of talent on this list, so we want to keep these guys together and also want to keep adding bits and pieces.
“So I think that (my contract) sets a good precedent for the group and if we can all do that – keep fitting people in but also keeping people, (it) will give us the best opportunity for success which is what we all want.”
