India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has copped a fine from the ICC for using a soothing cream without informing the umpires during India’s huge win over Australia.
Social media erupted on Thursday after the India star was spotted applying cream to his spin finger during his five-wicket tear of the Aussies in Nagpur, with Michael Vaughan demanding answers.
‘What is it he is putting on his spinning finger ? Never ever seen this …’ he tweeted.
India officials later insisted that Jadeja was applying soothing cream to help ease swelling on his finger, and the ICC indicated that no charges would be brought.
However, following India’s mauling of the tourists in Nagpur, the ICC have hit Jadeja with a fine – worth 25 per cent of his match fee – plus one demerit point, as he had failed to ask for permission from the umpires about the use of the cream.

‘The India team management had explained that the finger spinner was applying the cream to a swelling on the index finger of his bowling hand,’ a statement read. ‘This was done without asking for permission from the on-field umpires.’
Jadeja has accepted the sanction and the Match Referee was satisfied that the cream was used solely for medical purposes and that it had not been applied as an artificial substance to the ball in order to change its condition.
Australia fell to a humiliating defeat by an innings and 132 runs inside three days on Saturday, with Ravichandran Ashwin taking a five-wicket haul to embarrass Cummins’ side in Nagpur.
There had been fears over the pitch before a ball was bowled, with the Aussies complaining that it had been ‘doctored’ to the hosts’ advantage.
But India posted 400 runs in their first innings and Australia were unable to get anywhere near that total despite having two bites of the cherry, and Cummins admits that the wicket was ‘not unplayable’.
‘The game moves pretty quickly at times over here in India and you’ve got to manage the tempos, India played really well and Rohit showed his class,’ Cummins said after the match.
‘That first innings, the wicket spun but it wasn’t unplayable. We would’ve loved to have got another 100 or so runs and put pressure on their batting innings.’

However, Cummins insisted that there were reasons to be positive, with Marnus Labuschagne scoring 49 runs in the first innings while debutant Todd Murphy bagged a five-fa.
‘Obviously starting here is tough, but three or four of our guys got in and got comfortable,’ he said. ‘They’ve got to turn it into big scores and the other guys have got to find their way in.’
On Murphy, Cummins added: ‘He was fantastic on debut, been really impressive over the last year or so, he was fantastic.’
