Piers Morgan mocks Chris Silverwood after farcical post-Ashes defeat interview

Piers Morgan mocked England’s hapless head coach Chris Silverwood after he claimed there were ‘positives’ to take from his side’s Ashes drubbing.

Australia retained the urn after an English batting collapse of epic proportions on the third morning of the the third Test in Melbourne which saw the tourists bowled out for 68 to lose by an innings and 14 runs.

Debutan Scott Boland finished with scarcely believable figures of six wickets for seven runs from four overs, as England failed to offer even the merest hint of resistance in the face of some high quality pace bowling.

‘It is disappointing for us all and the lads will be feeling that in the dressing room.

‘Yesterday we had a little bit of disruption in the morning and I think the way the guys applied themselves on the field and the way the bowling attack rallied and got us back into this game was a credit to them.

‘The way we caught in the last innings was good as well and I think there are positives coming out of this. I’ve got to give our boys credit for the way they pushed back yesterday, but we have to find a way of scoring runs against this attack.’

Silverwood’s upbeat assessment of what has been an utterly shambolic performance has drawn widespread criticism, notably from Morgan who wrote on Twitter: ‘Positives? The only bloody positives from this fiasco were the Covid test results.’

He added: ‘England all out 68 – and the Ashes are gone in the most humiliating manner imaginable.

‘Congrats to Australia on being way too good for us, and to Scotty Boland – who I’d never heard of a week ago! – on one of the all-time great Ashes bowling performances. I feel sick.’

Despite having presided over such a dismal defeat, Morgan believes England should stick by captain Joe Root and allow him to oversee what will be the huge task of rebuilding the entire Test set-up.

He said: ‘This won’t be a popular opinion but Joe Root should continue as England captain despite this debacle.

‘He’s our best player, has carried the side all year on his prodigious batting shoulders, and shouldn’t be the sacrificial lamb for an abject team display. They let him down.’
