MS Dhoni reacts as Chennai Super Kings are crowned IPL champions
MS Dhoni paid tribute to beaten finalists Kolkata Knight Riders after leading Chennai Super Kings to the Indian Premier League title.
South Africa batter Faf du Plessis hit 86 from 59 balls and Moeen Ali smashed an unbeaten 37 from 20 balls as Chennai posted 192-3 in the final in Dubai.
Kolkata openers Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer took Eoin Morgan’s side to 88-0 at the halfway stage but both fell shortly after reaching their half-centuries.
The Knight Riders proceeded to suffer a dismal collapse, losing eight wickets for 33 runs and ultimately finishing on 165-9, 27 runs short of the target.
Chennai Super Kings’ title triumph is their first since 2018 and fourth overall, with five-time winners Mumbai Indians the only franchise who has enjoyed more success in IPL history.
Dhoni said: ‘Before I start talking about CSK, I need to talk about Kolkata. It’s difficult to come back and do what they have done
‘If any team deserved to win the IPL, it’s KKR. Huge credit to their coaches, team and support staff.’
Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Moeen, who became the first Englishman to play in and win an IPL final, added: ‘It’s amazing, I can’t describe it really. I never thought I’d win the IPL and to do it with this team is amazing.
‘MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming are so calm and clear with what they want to do. Everyone feels that in this team. It’s something you can’t buy. It’s such a grounded and humble team to be part of.’
