Michael Gibbons freak goal divides footy after damning TV replay

It was so good you’d to anything to give it to Michael Gibbons — and that’s exactly what the umpires did.

The Carlton trickster produced two miracle goal-of-the-year contenders in a bonkers first half of footy in Thursday night’s blockbuster clash with the Magpies, but his second goal from the third row of the MCG was clearly an umpire howler.

Gibbons showed sheer audacity to claim the goal, with replays showing his freakish dribble kick from the pocket left his boot when he was a mile out of bounds.

None of that seemed to matter, however, when Gibbons’ second quarter goal helped the Blues close the margin on Collingwood in a high-scoring half that saw the Pies lead 11.5 (71) to 8.3 (51) at the main break.

Gibbons had cleanly picked up a loose kick inside a wide open 50m arc in the Calton forward line, and swooped on it just in time to steady his balance and kick a snapping kick across his body.

The ball rolled towards the opposite side of the 50m arc before curling back in as a result of Gibbons’ forward momentum, cutting in just before the far goal post.

Replays, however, spoiled the party, with the images of Gibbons’ kick seeing footy legends Jonathan Brown, Garry Lyon and Nick Riewoldt break down in laughter at how clearly wrong the call was.

“Two of the all-times (goals) have been kicked by the same bloke in the one game. That was full of class,” Lyon said on Fox Footy.

“There’s Collingwood supporters all around us going, ‘Jeez give us a spell’.”

Gibbons also kicked a silky banana kick in the first quarter.

Not to be undone, Collingwood’s Taylor Adams may have stolen Gibbons’ nomination for goal of the week, with a similar freak dribble kick from the pocket that rolled in early in the third quarter.

Coming off a stoppage in the forward pocket, Adams picked up a loose ball at speed just a few metres inside the boundary line before slamming it down onto his boot in a lightning response.

As he fell forward the ball bounced straight towards the goals and snuck inside the near goalpost.

It took a score review to confirm the Sherrin hadn’t touched the goal post padding.

The first three quarters had delivered three genuine contenders for goal of the year.

“We have seen a couple of absolute crackers tonight but that will take some beating,” Hamish McLachlan said on Channel 7.

“Michael Gibbons or Taylor Adams are going to go to bed pretty unlucky if they don’t get Goal of the Night, let alone Goal of the Week.”
