Roy said the past three years had ‘taken its toll’ on him and he wanted to spend time with family

‘It’s with a heavy heart I have decided to pull out of this year’s tournament,’ Roy wrote on his social media accounts.

‘With everything going on in the world over the last three years it’s added up and taken its toll on me.

‘I feel it’s only right I spend some quality time with my family, as well as spending time working on myself and my game over the next couple of months leading into a very busy year.’

Roy follows England team-mates Joe Root and Ben Stokes in withdrawing from this year’s competition.

Root made himself unavailable as he opted not to put his name forward for the ‘mega auction’, saying after England’s woeful Ashes defeat that ‘there’s a lot that we need to do for this team, which deserves all of my energy’.

While Stokes admitted Test cricket was at the forefront of his mind, he said in his Mirror column: ‘Test cricket is absolutely my number one priority, and I want to work alongside Joe Root, the best man we could have as captain, to get us there.

‘It is why I thought long and hard about whether to go to the IPL or not, and felt that this was not about the money but about where my priorities are. It wouldn’t be fair on any team I signed up for if I wasn’t totally focused on things out there.

‘The Test team is where it is at for me right now and I want to give as much of my time and energy to that as possible. I think the Test side will benefit more from me playing a number of County Championship matches this summer and getting myself as best prepared as possible for the challenges of New Zealand and South Africa.’

Roy will be hoping to help England to World T20 glory in Australia later this year, having suffered an injury during the 2021 tournament that ruled him out of the semi-final defeat to New Zealand.
