GWS star Toby Greene suspended for two weeks for hit on Patrick Dangerfield

GWS star Toby Greene has been charged with striking and offered a two-match ban by the AFL Match Review Officer for his high hit on Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield.

The incident occurred in the first quarter of the clash between GWS and the Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night, which GWS won by 19 points in a huge upset.

After collecting a ground ball, Greene raised his arm to defend himself as Dangerfield attempted to tackle him.

Greene’s elbow then made sharp contact with Dangerfield, who was awarded a free kick for a high fend-off but fell to the turf before coming to the bench.

The star midfielder was replaced at quarter time by Geelong’s medical substitute Quinton Narkle.

Dangerfield suffered a bruised larynx from the incident and was taken to hospital, where he spent the night before being released on Saturday.

“Unfortunately as soon as you lift that elbow, that will be looked at,” North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey told Channel 7 in commentary.

“And because his name’s Toby Greene, it’ll be looked at twice as hard.”

Handing down his findings into the incident, Match Review Officer Michael Christian graded Greene’s hit as “careless conduct, high contact and high impact”.

GWS has already announced it will challenge the decision at the AFL tribunal early next week.

“We firmly believe this was a football action and doesn’t warrant a suspension,” Giants football manager Jason McCartney said.

“As such, we will challenge the initial ruling at the tribunal.”

The Giants are currently in eighth spot on the ladder and face Richmond and Carlton in the last two rounds of the season.

Any suspension to Greene will be a major blow to their hopes to make the finals.

Meanwhile, Geelong captain Joel Selwood escaped with $3000 fine for his late bump on GWS defender Sam Taylor.

Selwood, who wasn’t going for the football and only had eyes on Taylor, can consider himself lucky to get away with just a fine.
