Dropped catch proves costly in Australia’s loss to West Indies in second ODI

Another poor batting performance and a costly error in the field from Australia has allowed the West Indies to tie their ODI series 1-1 with a four-wicket win on Sunday.

The game finally got underway two days after it had been postponed due to Covid-19 concerns, but Australia could only managed 187 batting first.

The Aussie top order collapsed again as they fell to 6-45 early in the innings, thanks to a West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein, who put on an absolute clinic.

Ben McDermott was out for a duck and stand-in captain Alex Carey and Josh Phillipe only just got into double figures, leaving the tail with the daunting task of getting a respectable/competitive total on the board.

The tail wagged and fast bowler Wes Agar top-scored for Australia with 41, and he was supported by Matthew Wade (36) and Adam Zampa (36).

As it turned out, the total of 187 proved somewhat competitive, especially after Mitchell Starc bowled a couple of sensational deliveries to give his side a chance.

He trapped Evin Lewis lbw for one and clean bowled Darren Bravo for a golden duck, sending his off stump cartwheeling after a 148km/h thunderbolt.

Mitch Starc that is absolutely filthy! ?

Leg-spinner Zampa worked his magic to two key wickets including star batsman Kieron Pollard to reduce the West Indies to 5-72, to give Australia a chance at securing a 2-0 series win.

But Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder prevented that from happening, steadying the ship with a match-winning partnership of 92 before hitting the winning runs in the 38th over with plenty of time to spare.

But the Aussies will be ruing a costly error in the 27th over.

Pooran, who was on 26 at the time, attacked Zampa but hit the ball straight to Moises Henriques atmid off, but he couldn’t hold on to the catch, effectively dropping it cold.

“Moises Henriques — just been brought it to mid off from long off — in and out,” commentator Daren Ganga said.

“The Australians, only themselves to blame — well this man in particular, Henqriques. Just couldn’t hold on. In and out.”

That's a shocker from Henriques #WIvAus

If Henriques had taken the catch, it would have broken the key partnership and given the West Indies a nervous finish to the run chase at 6-123.

But Pooran didn’t waste his chance — the Aussies gave him multiple lives with Matthew Wade dropping him when he was on 49 — going on to make an unbeaten 59 as the West Indies secured a comfortable victory.

The three-match ODI series concludes with the decider early on Tuesday morning (AEST).
