A horror injury to Yorkshire fast bowler Dominic Leech saw the third day’s play of the Roses match at Headingley curtailed during the afternoon session.

Leech, 20, collided with a concrete wall in the west stand after slipping and losing his footing attempting to save a boundary, and damaged his left knee, leading to him being treated for a quarter of an hour before he was taken off on a stretcher. He was later taken to hospital, wearing a knee brace.

The bowlers’ run ups at the Emerald Stand end of the ground were subsequently inspected and the players were taken off for an early tea.

Morning rain had delayed the match’s resumption until noon but the ground condition worsened after several hours of sunshine drew dampness back to the surface.

Umpires Ian Gould and Nigel Llong abandoned play shortly after 4.30pm following two inspections due to ‘unfit and unsafe conditions.’

A statement from Yorkshire read: ‘Water has risen to the surface in key areas, where there has been most activity, including the bowlers’ run-ups.’

Lancashire head into the final day on 411 for two, with a game still in its first innings destined for a draw. Both clubs have already qualified for Division One of the County Championship when it is re-configured in September.
