Coaching scrutiny is ‘not enjoyable’ at Carlton
Carlton coach David Teague has conceded the ongoing scrutiny around his job is “not enjoyable” but he is feeding off the energy of his players as the Blues look to build on last week’s breakthrough victory.
Teague has spoken to the three men who began their review in to the club’s football department this week and said they were “super impressive”.
The review began the day after a win over the Crows which didn’t fully silence the noise around Teague’s future as coach.
Former St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon denied he had been approached by the Blues and Teague said the speculation took a toll, more on his family than himself.
“It’s not enjoyable. I’m not going to lie. But it’s part of the industry we are in,” he said on Thursday.
“I keep coming back to what I can control, how I present at the footy club. It’s probably harder on your family and friends, they are consumed by it.
“But I’ve still got lots of energy, I love coming to work I love coaching these boys and I hope to do it for a while.”
Sam Docherty underwent surgery yesterday to repair an acute syndesmosis injury.
Teague won’t be coaching co-captain Sam Docherty who had surgery this week after hurting his ankle in the melee last Sunday which also cost him $3000 in fines form the AFL.
Docherty, who missed two full seasons after back-to-back knee reconstructions, remains hopeful he could play again this season.
“From what I’ve heard it’s on the lesser side, but he did need an operation,” Teague said.
“Sam was telling me, Lachie Jones from Port Adelaide had one and was back within five to six weeks. He’s looking to that for motivation.
“He’s missed a lot of footy, he wants to play foot. We won’t risk him, we’ll do what’s in his best interests of him.
“But right now he’s keen to make it back.”
As well as finding replacements for Docherty and injured veteran Marc Murphy, Levi Casboult is in the frame to come back in to the side to face Fremantle on Saturday
The clash was on a venue rollercoaster for most of the week, moved from Perth Stadium with Tasmania, Geelong and even Ballarat potential locations before it was locked in at the MCG on Saturday night.
Carlton has won its past three clashes against the Dockers, who were forced to relocate to Melbourne earlier this week mid the escalating Covid crisis..
“We understand we’ve had a good little record, we were looking forward to going over to Perth to be honest,” Teague said.
“Our track record in Perth in terms of the players going away and playing over there, they enjoy it.
“But wherever it’s at we’re comfortable, I think everyone is going to have to be pretty agile over the next period of time when it comes to games.”
