Cats star Jeremy Cameron misses AFL season opener after injury
Star recruit Jeremy Cameron will be missing from Geelong’s season opener, the club confirmed Friday.
Cameron has been ruled out as a result of a second hamstring injury after reportedly feeling the muscle tweak near the end of the club’s main training session on Thursday.
Of far more concern for the club is that the injury is the same one he suffered during the pre-season and could see him miss the first month of the season.
Cameron was one of the highest profile stars to move clubs during the 2020 trade period and his arrival at Geelong gives the Cats the scariest forward line in football.
But the dream of a Cameron-Tom Hawkins one-two punch is on hold for now.
It is a big blow for the Cats ahead of their season opener against Adelaide on Saturday at Adelaide Oval.

Reports emerged before Geelong’s announcement that Cameron had re-injured the same hamstring injury he had been trying to recover from during his pre-season training.
Cameron was rested during most of Geelong’s pre-season matches and played limited minutes when he made his pre-season debut for the club against Collingwood last month.

Cats footy boss Simon Lloyd confirmed the injury on Friday morning.
“Jeremy has started his rehabilitation program but will not be available for at least the opening two rounds,” he said.
The Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph posted on Twitter the “re-occurrence” of the same injury means Cameron will likely be out for around four weeks.
Cameron will not be named when the Cats announce their team for Round 1 on Friday evening.
It comes after the Western Bulldogs made a surprise selection of their own in their Round 1 team announcement on Thursday with Jason Johannisen missing from the starting 22.
Cameron was expected to make an immediate impact when arriving at Geelong on a monster six-year contract.
Cameron nominated Geelong as his destination of choice for 2021 but in a free agency first, the Giants matched their rival’s monster offer, reported to be worth approximately $5.7 million over six years.
They eventually agreed to let him go when they were offered Geelong’s three first-round draft picks in return.
