BUMBLE AT THE TEST: Overton made an impressive start to Test career
BUMBLE AT THE TEST: Jamie Overton made an impressive start to his Test career and just looks a fast bowler while New Zealand have suffered with the series passing Kane Williamson by… and I’ve never seen anything like Henry Nicholls’ freak dismissal
- Headingley is one of my favourite grounds, there’s always a great atmosphere
- Yorkshire are a grand old club going through a tough time but will pull through
- Kane Williamson hasn’t made any runs and missed the second Test with Covid
- I’ve seen some weird dismissals in my time but nothing like Henry Nicholls’
New Zealand produced a late fightback after England largely dominated on the opening day of the third Test at Headingley.
The second session saw one of the most bizarre dismissals in Test history, with Henry Nicholls caught after his shot ricocheted off Daryl Mitchell’s bat and into the hands of Alex Lees.
But Mitchell’s fifty and century-stand with Tom Blundell saw the visitors make 225 runs, albeit for the loss of half of their side.
Here, Sportsmail‘s DAVID LLOYD picks out his talking points from the opening day’s action in Leeds.
New Zealand produced a late fightback after England largely dominated on day one
Headingley is one of my favourite grounds in the world. The Western Terrace was packed on Thursday and there’s always a fantastic atmosphere here.
Yorkshire are a grand old club going through a tough time and what has happened shows that when an organisation falls in the wrong hands at the highest level you’ve got a massive problem. But they will pull through.
Playlist is keeping me positive
I’m really grateful to all the people on social media who have offered support now I’m not commentating anymore.
It’s fair to say I’ve been badly shaken by it all. But when I get down I play three songs to cheer me up.
Elton John’s I’m still standing. I get knocked down but I get up again by Chumbawamba and The Pasadenas I’m doing fine now….

Kane form costing Kiwis
It’s been significant how small a part Kane Williamson has played in this series. He hasn’t made any runs and missed the second Test with Covid.
Then Stuart Broad got him with a beautiful set-up on Thursday.
It just goes to show what an impact a great player can have on a team – this series has just seemed to pass Williamson by and New Zealand have suffered.

Ow much for a bottle!
Yorkshire folk are noted for being a bit careful with their brass. So I’m not expecting barrels of the beer advertised by a Brixton pub to be sold behind the Western Terrace.
They’re advertising a bottle of artisan American craft ale for £105. But if you take it home you get a third off.
Yorkshire folk also like a bargain but I’m not sure that will entice them. Ow much!!
Jamie looks the part
An impressive start from Jamie Overton. He just looks like a fast bowler. He’s 6ft 5in with a great build and his pace was high 80s and even 90.
Interesting he’s shortened his run up working with Azhar Mahmood.
I reckon if Michael Holding was watching he would tell Jamie to extend it a bit to attack the crease. All his action at the moment is body strength…

My kind of President…
You often see dignitaries from counties at Test matches suited and booted and taking advantage of the hospitality.
But when I popped out of the press box for a coffee and a Danish pastry I bumped into the president of one of our finest clubs in T-shirt and baseball cap just on his way to his seat in the Western Terrace! That’s my kind of president…..
Wicket so freakish
An absolute freak dismissal on the stroke of tea. It bamboozled everybody. What happened there? It was driven back firmly by Henry Nicholls and at first I thought it had hit the umpire.
But he’d danced out the way and it had actually come off the non-striker’s bat and ballooned to mid-off. I’ve seen some weird dismissals in my time but nothing like that….
