Bizarre North Melbourne banner leaves AFL baffled

North Melbourne’s winless start to the season may have stretched to eight games with a loss to Collingwood on Saturday but before the match even started fans were scratching their heads.

And it had nothing to do with game.

The humble banner can often show the sense of humour at a club with the cheer squad able to show their team spirit.

Banners only returned to the AFL in round six this year.

Just last week, the Magpies did their own, with the banner reading: “Last time we did this we went all right. So show these Suns we own tonihgt”.

It comes after a 2018 banner than had the typo and the club was mercilessly mocked for the blunder.

Now round eight, the back of this week's Roos banner was an ad for the Big Little Veggie Patch Co. with a baffling message.

“Kanga, kanga, kanga, mush roo roo room lettuce squash the pies!”

Our best guess is that it’s a ham-fisted attempt at a reference to the 1989 song by Black Lace Agadoo — but that’s just a guess.

It had fans baffled by the message.

Banners are gone. That's it. North have ruined it for everyone.

On Facebook, the popular page Nuffies on AFL Pages picked up on it and were quick with the jokes.

“They had a few too many mush roo roo rooms doing the banner …” one comment read.

“Very nice of the little veggie patch co to donate north Melbourne 22 potatoes to play for them today,” read another.

Another said: “Is this photoshopped? Please tell me its fake” while another said: “What on earth is that even trying to say?”

There are other ways for banners to go wrong, like the 2018 Pies Grand Final banner that tore apart in the wind.

Banners can be great as well, such as one for local legend Mark Curtis, who played his 300th game, running through a banner than said “Congrats Curto. 300 games. 30 reports. 3 flags. 0 pre-seasons.”

The banner was just about as bad as the Kangaroos with the Magpies claiming a 14.10 (94) to 11.10 (76) win to open up a two game gap between North and the rest of the ladder.

Collingwood began to assume control of the contest in the second term, making the Kangaroos pay on the scoreboard booting 5.4 to 1.4 – opening up a 30-point halftime lead.

After the major break, the Roos responded with four unanswered goals to cut the margin to six points early in the third term.

Again, Collingwood steadied and responded with a one-two punch of their own – booting four of the last five as Cameron’s second helped maintain the Magpies’ five-goal barrier heading into the final quarter.

Jordan De Goey’s sixth sealed the result for the Magpies as North squandered numerous opportunities to get back into the contest in the final term.

North Melbourne weren’t lelded out by the “worst decision of the year” either.
