Ben Stokes on course for return to action next month as the star all-rounder aims to recover from knee issue which troubled him in England’s series defeat against the West Indies

Ben Stokes will continue to manage his knee issue with England and Durham ahead of a planned return to county action early next month.

The England vice-captain suffered problems during the tour of the West Indies, as Joe Root’s side slumped to a Test series defeat after a disappointing loss in Grenada.

Stokes had confirmed he was not doing any training while waiting for the results of further checks in a bid to determine how he can move forwards.

The England star had a scan on his troublesome left knee but it did not reveal anything new

The domestic season has resumed ahead of another busy summer international schedule, starting against New Zealand in June.

It is understood a scan on Stokes’ left knee did not reveal anything new.

It had been planned for Stokes to return to LV= Insurance County Championship action with Durham in early May, which remains the case, although the 30-year-old is understood to continue to feel some tenderness in his knee.

Stokes hopes to return for a busy summer of cricket, starting against New Zealand in June

England’s vice-captain was not expected to bowl in the first Test of the 1-0 series defeat by West Indies, following a side strain in the Ashes.

However, he ended up sending down 99 overs across the three matches, the most of any English pace bowler.  

Stokes opted out of this year’s Indian Premier League.
