Ben Stokes issues 4am statement as England stars accused of snubbing Aussies

England captain Ben Stokes has clarified why his team did not have post-match drinks with Australia at the Kia Oval. The all-rounder posted a message in the early hours of this morning confirming that the two sides had met up on a night out instead.

England levelled the Ashes up at 2-2 on the final evening of the series on Monday. Stuart Broad got his fairytale ending by picking up the final two wickets on his last day as a professional cricketer.

It brought an end to one of the most exciting Ashes series in recent memory. There was little celebration from the Australia side when they picked up the urn, knowing they had let slip the chance of winning a series in England for the first time since 2001.

Broad isn’t the only player to bow out, with Moeen Ali confirming that it was his final Test match too. It is often common practice for teams to meet at the ground at the end of a series to have a few drinks together.

Ashes: Result a 'fair reflection' of two good teams says Stokes

However, that didn’t happen on Monday. The Guardian reports that the Australia players attempted to make contact with the England dressing room but were unsuccessful before leaving the ground at around 10.45pm.

But Stokes has revealed that players from both teams met up in a nightclub instead. Tweeting at 4.11am, he confirmed why the get-together didn’t occur at the ground.

He wrote: “To clarify… Our wrap took longer than expected because of multiple last time events. We decided to meet up in the nightclub rather than the dressing room.”

It was the dream ending for Broad as he had Alex Carey caught behind to give England victory by 49 runs. But one person not pleased by his retirement is Stokes’ wife Clare.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Stokes revealed that Broad has played a big part in ensuring he is back safe from a heavy night out during his career. He said: “When he announced his retirement, I told my wife that this was going to be his last game.

“She was like: ‘Oh, Broady is the one who messages me saying that Ben has got home safe after a good night out’ after we’ve won a Test match. So she doesn’t have that anymore. So it’s going to be someone else, probably Rooty [Joe Root].”
