England are staring down the barrel of another Ashes defeat with Australia well set to hand visitors a daunting fourth-innings chase.

Yet another batting collapse from Joe Root’s men saw them bundled out for just 237 in reply to Australia’s 473 for nine declared.

The hosts then reached 45 for one at stumps on day three, a lead of 282 runs and with David Warner the only man out after a mix-up with Marcus Harris.

Host commentator

Overnight Stuart Broad, writing in his Sportsmail column, has insisted England can save the second Test.

‘Now, we need to hold the game as long as possible — although the ball is turning, it’s not misbehaving for the seamers in the slightest, so can we bat four sessions? Absolutely. Can we save it? Yes. We just need two or three batters to be heroic.’

Sportsmail’s Lawrence Booth in Australia tells me: To make matters worse for England, this news has just dropped: ‘England captain Joe Root will not be on the field at the start of play today after being hit in the abdomen during throw downs in the warm-up before play. He is currently being assessed by the England medical team.’

So, England are staring down the barrel of another emphatic Ashes defeat in the second Test in Adelaide… can it get much worse? In a word, yes – and it has, before play has even started.
