Australia drop major clue on picking Mitch Marsh or Cam Green for fourth Test

Australia have dropped a major clue over their selection dilemma for the fourth Ashes Test against England. The tourists have a decision to make over whether to pick Mitch Marsh or recall Cameron Green at Old Trafford.

Green missed out at Headingley due to a slight hamstring injury. Marsh grabbed his opportunity with both hands by scoring a stunning century in his first Test innings since 2019.

He smashed a run-a-ball 118, with 17 fours and four sixes on the first day in Leeds. He also chipped in with a couple of wickets in the match, getting Zak Crawley in both innings.

Green is back fit ahead of this week’s match in Manchester. It could be a straight shootout between the pair for who bats at No 6.

Australia won’t name their final XI until the toss on Wednesday. But they may have dropped a big indicator of where their plans lie.

A picture emerged on Twitter on Monday of the Australia side practising their slip catching. Green has earned a reputation as one of the finest slip fielders around, showcasing his talent in that position earlier in the series as well as in the World Test Championship final win over India.

However, the picture showed Marsh positioned at fourth slip, hinting that is how Pat Cummins will set his side up this week. Green was elsewhere, warming up with the likes of Scott Boland, who could be dropped in favour of Josh Hazlewood.

Another route back into the team for Green could have been as an opener. However, Cummins has confirmed that David Warner is likely to keep his spot at the top of the order.

He said: “We’ll chat about it, but I imagine it will stay the same. I think [Warner] has been going really well. I thought at Lord’s, he was really impressive. Last week, like many of us, he probably didn’t contribute as much as he would have liked with the bat.

“He’s been out there over the last couple of days putting in a lot of work, but I think this tour he has shown a lot of good signs and hasn’t quite kicked on to make that big score. Some of those innings he’s played under really tough circumstances has made it easy for [Steven] Smith to come in and score runs, or the like.”

Green could also come into the team in place of Todd Murphy. However, that would put a lot of pressure on Travis Head to be Australia’s sole spin option.
