Cricket Australia is looking to move the COVID-stricken Melbourne Stars’ clash with Adelaide on Friday night, as the country’s exploding case numbers wreaks more havoc with the Big Bash League.
There are also more cases among BBL clubs on Thursday, with the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades the latest to return positive results.
The Stars are due to have as many as 15 players and support staff leave isolation on Thursday, but there are concerns from the club whether they will be physically or mentally ready to play a game after a week of inactivity.
CA are aware of the Stars’ worries and considering if it would be appropriate for the game to go ahead as scheduled. If a change is required, it would be the third game CA will have postponed due to the virus.
The Stars are planning to play and have a chartered flight available to fly to Adelaide for the game, but they will not know the condition of their players until Thursday night.
Players and staff must return two negative rapid antigen tests, and need a tick of approval from the club doctor after a consultation to return to the bubble. Due to the high numbers within the Stars, this process may take much of the day.
As many as 12 to 13 Stars players could remain unavailable if all the infected cohort exiting isolation are deemed not ready to play.
