Agony for Brisbane Lions star
Lions star Eric Hipwood’s worst fears have been confirmed, with the Brisbane key forward facing up to a year on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.
Hipwood, 23, suffered the serious injury in the Lions’ shock 32-point loss to St Kilda at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night, when he landed awkwardly and twisted his left knee.
Scans on Monday confirmed the ACL rupture, with Hipwood to have surgery on Tuesday.
“This is very disappointing news for both Hipwood and the club, but we will rally around him and provide our full support to him,” Lions general manager of football Danny Daly said.
“He’ll require surgery and rehabilitation over the next 10-12 months and the club will provide all the help and support that he needs to get back out on the field.
“He’s in good spirits and he’s still got many years of footy ahead of him, and hopefully many more as a Lion.”

Hipwood has kicked 26 goals in 17 appearances this season, with his injury a blow to Brisbane’s AFL premiership hopes.
He is the second Lions forward to have injured his ACL this year, with Cam Rayner suffering the same fate in the pre-season.
The fourth-placed Lions continue their season on Friday night against premiers Richmond at the MCG.
