Xu Can set to call out Josh Warrington after Leigh Wood Fight Camp battle
Xu Can has stated that he would like to 'call out' the winner of Josh Warrington's clash with Mauricio Lara later in the summer.
The WBA regular featherweight champion is now set to return to the ring for the first time in over a year, when he faces British challenger Leigh Wood at Fight Camp this Saturday night.
But the Chinese fighter has since revealed that he could return to the negotiations table with Warrington, providing they both come through their respective fights in the next two months.
"At the moment I only want to focus on this fight," Xu Can said at a media day ahead of his return
"But we had lots of rounds of negotiations with Warrington who was an ideal opponent.
"So I personally want to challenge Warrington after this fight.
"But this can only happen depending on the outcomes of my fight with Wood and his fight with Lara."
The featherweight with two defeats on his record produced a comprehensive display in American against undefeated Manny Robles last time out, to score a unanimous decision victory over the undefeated fighter.
Can also only has three knockouts during his career to date, in comparison to his upcoming opponent Wood who is notorious for his power-punching style, and has recorded 14 stoppages during his professional career.
But 'The Monster' has ruled out this powerful style affecting his game plan for the contest, and has pointed out his own strengths in signalling his response.
"I think that my defence is strong enough to combat Leigh Wood in this fight," Can continued.
I am good throwing continuous and non-stop punches during the fight.
"So I don't think it will be an issue when approaching this fight and in my preparations.
"Everybody has their specialties and mine is throwing a high volume of shots, the test comes when we are in the ring."
With this huge contest coming up for the champion, he is currently ranked as the second best active featherweight by ESPN with his only two defeats coming early on his professional career against domestic rivals.
And he could be set to make history in his home country, by becoming the first boxer from China to successfully defend his world title three times, to which he unveiled his delight.
"For myself it is just one of many natural outcomes for the fight," Can concluded.
"I care more about the natural disasters in my country, and want to devote my victory to the people in my province."
His potential future opponent Warrington is set to return to the ring later in the year on September 4 as he faces a rematch with Mexican Lara who pulled off a shock result earlier in the year.
Undisputed female world champion Katie Taylor is also set to make her return to the ring on that card, where she faces American Jennifer Han in Leeds.
The cards are all now set to be exclusively broadcast on DAZN, after Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing signed a new deal with the streaming service after their previous contract with multimedia giant Sky Sports ended.
